Elliot's obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Elliot Labiner, 91, on February 4, 2023, in Rockville Centre, NY. He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Bess. He is survived by his son David (Jan) and daughter Susan Watt (Phil) as well as by four granddaughters: Kate, Betsy, Elissa, and Michelle.
Elliot was born in Michigan but grew up in Queens, New York. He attended McBurney High School and Johns Hopkins University. After earning his engineering degree, he went to work at Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation, later Grumman Aerospace Corporation. Most notably among his projects, Elliot worked on the Apollo program. He helped design the lunar module and lunar rover. After leaving Grumman, he went to work in the family business, Consolidated Tea Company (Swee-Touch-Nee Tea), until his retirement at age 85.
He was very active in the Rockville Centre Boys’ Basketball League where he served as a coach, in various leadership positions, and ultimately League Commissioner. Perhaps his greatest contribution to this organization was his role in achieving complete integration of the league allowing all young men to not only play but represent the community on traveling teams.
His love of engineering and basketball was matched by his love of traveling with Bess, fine food and wines, and music. And, though he complained about them frequently, he also loved and spoiled the many dachshunds he and Bess adopted and rescued over the years.
No funeral is planned. A private memorial will be held in the future.
