Elizabeth's obituary
Elizabeth “Betty” Anne Campbell, 86, passed away on September 29th, 2022 in San Francisco.
Betty was born in Covington, Kentucky to Leo and Josephine Schmitt. Her older siblings were George and Mary Lee. Josephine did not survive the childbirth and at 6 months old Betty and her siblings were sent to be raised at the St. John’s Orphanage by the Benedictine nuns.
Betty had many fond memories assisting the sisters with their duties. It was there that she learned how to cook while assisting in the kitchen. Cooking would factor large in her life. Betty attended mass each and every day while at St. John’s. That formed her strong faith that stayed with her throughout her life.
Betty attended Notre Dame Academy high school and graduated in 1954. She went on to be a secretary in a law firm in Cincinnati and, later, the executive assistant to the president of International Harvester Corporation.
In 1961 Tom Campbell introduced her to his brother James. They were married in September and lived in Fort Mitchell, KY with his parents. Her daughter, Carye, was born soon afterwards.
The family moved to Whittier, California in 1964.
When Betty’s sons, James and Joe, were born they moved to Seal Beach. In 1973 they moved to Newport Beach. There the family joined Our Lady Queen of Angels parish. Betty did volunteer work for both the school and church wherever they lived.
The family moved to Orange Park Acres in 1976. Betty was an active volunteer at St. Catherine's and later at Servite Catholic High School. She organized many wonderful road trips and summer vacations together as a family.
When Carye moved to San Francisco, Betty followed her in 1998 and settled in Pacific Heights. She regularly attended mass at St. Vincent de Paul’s and St. Dominic’s churches, and St. Mary’s Cathedral. These churches were her preferred place of solace.
Betty developed a deep love of this city: exploring, shopping and walking everywhere in San Francisco. She would talk with everyone; from the cashiers at Molly Stones to the managers of Silver Fox dry cleaners.
Betty made many friends at church and around her neighborhood. She enjoyed spending the weekends with Carye; shopping, running errands and cooking. Cooking had always been a source of joy and creativity. Her son-in-law would joke that he married Carye because “her mother made the best angel food cake he ever had”!
In 2018 Betty moved to Laguna Honda Hospital after a fall. There she met and made an impression upon a wonderful group of care providers.
Betty leaves behind her daughter Carye and her husband Joseph Urban, her son James and his wife Lisa, daughter Julia and son Jay, and her son Joseph and his wife Terry, son Brennan and daughter Ryan. She also leaves behind her sister, Mary Lee Creed of Ft. Meyer FL.
