Eleanor Shoop of East Lyme, CT passed away Saturday April 3, 2021 with her family by her side. Born on January 21, 1925 in Elizabeth, NJ. Eleanor lived a long and rich life. She grew up during the Great Depression and met her husband Elvin Shoop during WWII at Miami University in Ohio where she was studying to become a chemist and Elvin was attending officer training. They were married in Greenwich, CT in 1947. Not only was she one of few women to graduate with a degree in chemistry but she was also a member of Phi Betta Kappa. She worked as a chemist at Cyanamid for several years before starting a family. While still raising her children in Guilford, CT she went back to school and earned a Masters Degree in chemistry from Southern Connecticut State College. She began working at Pfizer as a chemist in 1975, just one year before her husband Elvin died of a brain tumor. A year later she made the move to East Lyme, CT with her youngest daughter, the last of her children still at home, to be closer to work. A lover of music, she frequently attended Eastern Connecticut Symphony concerts and the Goodspeed Opera House. Her love of travel lead her to many places in America and all over the world. She served as president of the board of Churchwood Condominiums for many years. She was active with 50+ Singles and frequently served as one of the organizers of their events. But perhaps her greatest love was for her family. She is survived by her three children, William Shoop (Rose), Margaret Erickson and Nancy Shoop-Wu (Wu Hung) as well as her sister Claire Swinnerton, five grandchildren, and several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
