Elaine's obituary
Mrs. Deuber was born on Feb. 27, 1930 in Baltimore to Carroll Brown Cordray and Mina Hamilton Cordray. She grew up in West Baltimore and graduated from Western High School in 1947.
She married John (Jack) H. Deuber on Sept. 23, 1950. The couple had two daughters, Penny Mae Deuber, born July 1, 1952, and Pamela Rae Deuber, born Jan. 31 1957. The family lost David Carroll Deuber, twin of Pamela, on Feb. 12, 1957.
In the 1970s, the couple adopted Richard Harry Deuber when he was 12 years old.
In 1959, Jack Deuber was hired as staff announcer at WMAR-TV. He later went on to become the sports director at the station and was known as Jack Dawson on television. This move was fitting, as Mrs. Deuber was an avid sports fan and a longtime Baltimore Colts season-ticket holder.
Mrs. Deuber was well-regarded as the ultimate hostess. During one football season in the 1970s, she invited the entire Colts team and their wives over for dinner following the next week’s game. On game day, Elaine prepared a full meal for dozens of men, attended the entire game with Jack and then hosted more than half of the hungry team members at their home in Lutherville, Md.
She attended Super Bowls III and V and the 1966 World Series in which the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers.
She also enjoyed cooking and traveling while being a devoted wife. While attending various sporting events and other gatherings Jack Deuber was hosting or asked to take part in, she was his ultimate partner – never forgetting a face and quietly reminding him of a name or family whenever he needed help.
She was an active member of Towson United Methodist Church for many years, serving on various committees. Her baking skills were widely known throughout the church. As part of a yearly fundraiser for the church’s Camp Hope program, she would auction her services as a baker, preparing a cake a month for the highest bidder. One year, in response to two high bids, she volunteered to double her efforts, cooking two cakes a month for the year so the church would receive the extra money.
Above all else, Mrs. Deuber considered family her top priority. Relationships at church led the Deuber family to the Edel family, including Lynne Edel and her two children. When Lynne’s own mother died in the 1980s, the Deubers took it upon themselves to treat Lynne and her children as their own family.
As Mrs. Deuber’s children began starting their own families, she took on one of her most cherished roles: grandmother. She watched her grandchildren weekly, while her own children were at work.
The couple lived in Lutherville for 35 years before moving to Towson, Md. In 2014, they moved to Abingdon, Md., to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Gary Carr. Mrs. Deuber was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease in 2014.
In early 2019, the couple moved to Sterling Care Riverside in Belcamp, Md. As the disease progressed Mrs. Deuber’s health slowly declined. She died on Oct. 29, 2019 with Jack Deuber and Pamela Carr at her side.
Mrs. Deuber is preceded in death by her sister, Carolyn Mina Cordray, who died in 2017. She is survived by her husband of 69 years, John H. Deuber; her four children Penny Barrick, Pamela Carr (Gary Carr), Richard Deuber and Lynne Edel; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren, plus one on the way.
Elaine’s memorial service will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9 at Towson United Methodist Church. Reception at the church will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to be made to Towson United Methodist Church or the Alzheimer’s Association.
