This was my Eulogy for my mom, as I wrote it and shared it with those that attended the Mass. Father Vince guided me to think about "Why are we here" as I composed this.
Why are we here?
Good morning
Thank you all for coming today to honor and celebrate the life of Elaine Davis.
I am Scott, Elaine’s oldest son, and I wanted to take a few minutes to speak with you about why we have all gathered here today.
Each of you is here because Elaine was important in your life; she positively affected you in some way. Some of you might simply know her as “Nurse Davis”. She helped heal countless people over her 40-plus years in nursing. Some of you were Elaine’s co-workers, which led to friendships that have lasted years. Some of you are here because you met as neighbors, or because you went to the same high school or nursing school, or you got introduced through the Davis Family and became friends. Elaine had many friends that came into her life in so many different ways. And she made an impact on all of you. That is why we are here.
I’ve heard you say such things as: “She was like a mother to me,” “She was always there to listen to me,” or “She helped me through a difficult time.” I’ve also heard you say Elaine was “an Angel on Earth.” I would agree, and we all now have another Angel to watch over us all. That is why we are here.
Others of us are here because she was more than a friend. She was an Aunt, a cousin, a sister, a wife. And in the case of my brother Troy and I, we were lucky enough to call her Mom. She was an amazing Mom, and she would have done anything for her boys, whom she loved unconditionally. A Mom that was happiest when those around her, both friends and family, were happiest. She lived her life not for herself but for those in her life. She lifted herself by making those around her better. That was her life’s goal: to help others. She was kind, compassionate, smart, funny, determined, giving, and forgiving. Everyone that knew her, everyone that is here today, knows this is true. That is why we are here.
So today, we honor and celebrate her and what she meant to us all. We carry her with us in our hearts, minds, and souls. As we all go on today and into the coming days, weeks, months, and years, we will continue to celebrate her and her legacy and honor her by living life the way she always would: making certain those around us are happy. Take care of those around you the way my mom cared for each of you, and we will all be better for it.
She made each of us better people. That is why we are here.
I love you Mom, I will miss you terribly
