Elaine's obituary

It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of our mother, aunt, sister, and friend Elaine Jeanette Dachyshyn on Tuesday September 5, 2023, in Kelowna, British Columbia at the age of 62. She was the youngest daughter of the late Nick & Elizabeth (Betty) Dachyshyn. Elaine was born in Edmonton, Alberta, grew up in Devon, Alberta, and after high school spent time living in Kelowna and Kamloops, British Columbia and Edmonton, Alberta.

Elaine is survived by her daughters Stephanie Dawn Bain, and Katie Lee Bain, brother Dean Dachyshyn, sister Anne Nixon along with nieces Lindsay, Jen, Angie (Anne Nixon) and nephew Barrett (Dean Dachyshyn).

Elaine was a mother, but she was also a wonderful, exciting and fun friend and athlete. From a young age she was a dedicated volleyball player, decorated figure skater and highly skilled basketball player and coach. This love for athletics bled into her adult life playing on slow pitch and curling teams, and enjoying golf with her friends. Not only did Elaine enjoy participating and competing in sports, you would often find her watching, and often falling asleep to, professional tennis and curling matches, and figure skating competitions. She had such an appreciation for athleticism both her daughters participated in their respective sports in which she was their biggest and loudest cheerleader, often overshadowing the other parents present, never afraid to give them advice for a competitive edge.

When Elaine wasn’t playing sports competitively, she was also playing card and board games competitively, while being the life of any party she was invited to. In being the life of the party, it gave her the great responsibility of having many friends who were always waiting for her to use her quick and clever wit to give loving lashings to those who needed it, with a side of sarcasm (which was practically her first language). This being a part of her personality made her light up any room with laughter, even making the shyest person come out of their shell. Her honesty with everyone she met made her someone most could truly trust, because she would always speak what was on her mind. To some, Elaine may have had a hard exterior, but to those who knew her, her speaking her mind meant she cared, and she cared greatly.

From the time she became a mother she put herself on the back burner to put her children first, working hard to take care of them to the best of her ability. This, and her athletic history led her to having two hip replacements in her late 50’s. After struggling with pain for over a decade she was finally able to walk freely again. Showing great excitement at the smallest of things, watering the flowers, picking up items off the floor and grabbing a beer from the fridge for her and her friends.

Elaine was incredibly special to all those who knew her, and she will be cherished forever. Her strength, and her determination will never be forgotten. Truly a person, who is gone too soon.
