Eeyore's obituary
While those of us who loved him aren’t sure of his birthdate, we became aware of him in the early 2000s when he began stealing our clothes and gloves and towels hung outside to dry. He brought these items to his then-owner, Skip. After Eeyore stole an expensive Columbia sweater and rolled it in a muddy gutter, he wasn’t welcome at home. He relocated himself to the next block over to live with Melissa and Jonathan, and immediately started bringing them the neighborhood laundry.
In that era, he pilfered children’s soccer socks, the top half of a scarecrow, a large stuffed turtle, a striped “Cat in the Hat” hat, a full-sized bath towel, a ridiculous amount of left-handed gloves, and a lime green Victoria’s Secret bra. He also developed a disconcerting habit of leaping from the street to the shoulders of whomever might be walking by—the postal carrier, the meterman, various gardeners, and people just out for a stroll. His eccentricities were fodder for several essays on the back page of Horizon Air Magazine.
In his later years, Eeyore moved in with Sally, who lives behind Jonathan and Melissa. They were each other’s constant companions. She pampered him with beef heart and nutritional supplements and endless affection. These were his glory years—he glowed with vitality. On his daily adventures outside, he made his rounds of the neighborhood laundry racks, gifting Sally with an ongoing supply of underwear, dish towels, socks, and—once again—numerous left-handed gloves.
Eeyore passed away after approximately two decades of a life very well lived. He brought joy and comfort to all who owned him over the years, and hilarity to the rest of the neighbors. Donations in his name may be made to Greenhill Humane Society in Eugene.
