Ed's obituary
Schmidt, Edwin L., loving husband and father, died on Monday, January 16th in Phoenix, AZ, the area in which he had resided for most of his golden years. Ed was 83 years old and passed from complications related to Parkinson’s disease, which he had battled for four years.
He had a BS degree in Electrical Engineering from St. Louis University and had retired from his career in engineering with Boeing aviation (previously Mc Donnell Douglas), where he helped design simulators for fighter jets for the United States military and other similar projects. Edwin was very smart with mathematics and physics and also was a strong leader and manager to those he mentored.
In his downtime, Ed enjoyed swimming, fishing, golf, and tennis. He also was an active member of the local Democrats club. As a youngster he excelled at basketball and also enjoyed coaching his children’s sports teams. Causes that were important to him were climate change and preserving the health of our oceans.
Ed is survived by his wife Kathleen and three adult children: Julie Bartz of Cave Creek, AZ, Matt Schmidt of Mesa, AZ, and Stephen Schmidt of Plano, TX; and two sisters, Jean Stuckel of Osage Beach, Mo. and Donna Achilles of St. Robert, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Marie Schmidt, and his brother Gary Schmidt.
Ed was a giving and generous person. As such, he wanted his body to be used for learning and advancement of science. Upon his death, it was his wish to donate his body to “Research for Life” for this purpose.
