Edwin's obituary

Ed set sail on his final voyage November 9th surrounded by his family. He was a hardworking mariner, a commercial fisherman and later engineer, whose love of the ocean was evident his entire life. He was at home on the water and with that came an indelible and almost always inappropriate sense of humor that, if you had the pleasure of knowing Ed, was his trademark. So, if he was here to write this, he’d say, “I didn’t wake up this morning with a blue-veiner or diamond cutter”. He always found ways to make you laugh even when the chips were down, and through his long and sometimes difficult journey through life, they were down more than anyone would have liked.

Ed served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict from 1950-54. Upon discharge, he met his wife, Penny, and together they raised 5 beautiful children. His love of the ocean was passed on to each with his son following in his footsteps as a Merchant Mariner, and his daughters all with their own love of the water.

Ed is survived by his wife of 65-1/2 years Penelope Nichols, his children Lane Nichols, Danny Nichols (Judy), Tracey Folmsbee (Woody), Amy Sturges (Warren) and Adrienne Beuhler (Jared) and a host of grand and great grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Wallace Nichols and Lowell Nichols.

Preceding him in death are his father Charles Nichols, mother Alice Crockett, sister Leila Applegate, brother Charles Curtis Nichols, grandson David Hall and son-in-law Michael Abney.

Whether you called him Ed, Nick, Sonny, Blue Steel or Oomah the Great, the mark he left on everyone he met was big, and this loss even bigger.

No service will be held at this time.
