Edward's obituary

Edward J. Timins, Sr. (Timinskas - Thomesky), 2108 Jackson St., died unexpectedly Tuesday shortly after admittance to Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton at the age of 69. His widow is the former Mary L. Leikauskas R.N.

He was born May 7, 1917 in Scranton, the son of the late Anthony and Julia Bubelis Timinskas. He was baptized on May 20, 1917 at St. Joseph's Church in Throop, Pa. Sponsors were Stephanus and Teckla Repsza (Rephsas). He was educated in Scranton schools and was a graduate of Scranton Tech H.S. class of 1936. Following graduation he attended St. Thomas College and Cornell University studying science and pre-med. He served his country proudly in the United States Navy during World War 11, as a Petty Officer 3rd Class, Navy Corpman, and Navy Combat Medic, receiving an honorable discharge. (Edward is listed in the National WW2 Registry of Remembrance.) He received the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, WW2 Pacific Service Medal, and the World War 11 Victory Medal because he had been stationed at the U.S. naval military bases in both Hilimoi in Milne Bay and Wagga Wagga, Papua New Guinea and also Bora Bora, Polynesia. During bombings and attacks, Edward worked around the clock as a medic recovering victims and defending the base from further hostilities.

Following the War he took a chemist position at Publicker's Lab in Philadelphia, Pa. After marrying Mary on June 4, 1949, they returned to Scranton where he became employed as supervisor of the water treatment plant at Clark's Summit State Hospital until his retirement in 1982.

Edward was a supporting member of St. Ann's Monastery Church, the National Railway Historical Society and a member of the William Malia Chapter Disabled Veterans. He was very proud of his Lithuanian heritage and spoke the language fluently. He was a Cubmaster for the Boy Scouts of America at the Keyser Valley Community Center in West Scranton. A classical music enthusiast, he enjoyed Scranton's Community Concerts and the Broadway Theater League. The trips to Europe were treasured memories. Ed appreciated the fine engineering of the Chrysler New Yorker and was loyal to the brand. He was an avid reader, a history buff, and a collector of H O model brass steam engines. But most of all, he just enjoyed his life being married to the most beautiful woman he ever saw, his wife Mary, who he loved so deeply.

To him, family was everything and always cherished the time spent with them. Edward will lovingly be remembered by his devoted wife Mary Timins R.N. and daughter Bonita L. Timins Berman. He will be missed by brothers August Timinskas and Peter Timinskas, many nieces and nephews, and numerous extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by a brother Anthony (1915).

A funeral service was  held Thursday from the Thomas J. Hughes Funeral Home, 1240 St. Ann St., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. officiated by Rev. Richard Molka C.P., in St. Ann's Monastery Church. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery, Section 12.
