Edward's obituary
In loving memory of our father, Edward "Moe" Sweeney, who passed away on June 12, 2023. Ed was born on November 23, 1939, in Philadelphia, PA, to Edward Sweeney Sr. and Mary Connolly Sweeney and lived at 27th and Moore Streets . He attended Bishop Neumann/Roman Catholic High School, where he played track and varsity football. He met his blonde bombshell wife, Betty Yulianetti, while he worked at Curtis as a mail clerk, they fell in love, and married in 1961. They had two children, Ron, then Joyce 11 months later. They remained married for 62 years until her passing in 2021.
Ed excelled in school, and set his sights on being a pilot. Unfortunately he failed his eye test. Ed began his career at Gulf Oil and started school at night at Drexel University, where he obtained his Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering. He worked at Control Data Corp. in Minnesota before returning to Philadelphia, where he worked at General Electric, Sperry-Univac. From there he worked at the US Navy (NADC), in Johnsville, Warminster, Bucks County PA. Ed obtained his Masters in Engineering from Penn State in 1986. From there he moved to many high profile projects, and he delighted in each one. Even though he couldn't be a pilot, he was energized by working on the ASW project at NADC, an early GPS program, and at one point obtaining his GS-14 working at Department of Defense in Washington DC, (Pentagon), but as he often noted it was in a trailer. He ended up his career from the Navy at Patuxent River, MD and retired from the US government.
Ed and Betty had a love for the casinos. Ed loved blackjack and competed in many competitions in Atlantic City, Las Vegas and Aruba. He spent many hours learning the ins and outs of betting and odds. Betty loved her slots and Bingo, often traveling to other states to compete. They also enjoyed watching the Philadelphia Phillies, and Philadelphia Eagles. When they moved away from Philly, they continued to feel pride in their hometown.
Ed was also a weekend car mechanic, much to Betty's chagrin. He loved his bright yellow Dodge Swinger, 1972 Dodge Challenger, 1970 Dodge Charger. His first car was a 1956 Chevy Bel Air, a source of pride for him.
Ed also held a post-retirement career in tax management, an entirely new and fun direction for him and he worked his way up to Store Manager at Jackson Hewitt. He loved this job as well.
Ed will be lovingly missed by his family and grandchildren Eric Homewood and Matt Homewood, who were very proud of him and followed his path to graduate from Penn State University, like their grandfather had. Matt even followed in Computer Engineering as well. They also loved his sense of humor and his patient ways, especially if in need of an occasional math or physics tutoring, that could make an ordinary 10 minute lesson into hours.
