Edward's obituary
Edward Henry Scheenstra, 93, went to be with the Lord on December 24, 2025. Ed was born in Poppenwier, Friesland in the Netherlands on April 9, 1932, and came to the United States with his family when he was 15. The family took a bus from the East Coast to Bellflower, CA, where Ed went to work with his father digging fence posts, and later began milking cows for local dairymen. Ed married his life partner, Betty Wiersma, in 1952. Together, they raised six children. Eventually, Ed and his brother Carl started an auction business called C & E Furniture. When Carl died during a trip to the Netherlands, Ed continued the business on his own, often with the help of his children, until he retired after the auction’s 50th anniversary. (During the last years, Ed formed a partnership with his son Ron called E & R Furniture.) Ed was respected in the auction community for his integrity. He leaned over backwards to accommodate employees who were struggling and looked for opportunities to help people. Ed was an avid deep-sea fisherman, his largest catch being a 280-pound tuna! Ed and Betty attended Lincoln Avenue Community Church in Pomona, CA, for almost their entire adult lives. Ed served as both a deacon and an elder, taught Sunday School, and helped with the physical maintenance of the church. His Christian faith was important to him all of his life.
Edward was preceded in death by his wife Betty, and is survived by his children: Richard (Sharon), Linda (Dave), Lori, Roger (Sue), Ron (Kathy) and Lisa (John), as well as his thirteen grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren, along with his brother Al. A Celebration of Life service will be held at Lincoln Avenue Community Church, 1511 Lincoln Ave, Pomona, CA, on January 7 at 10:00 am, followed by a luncheon. The service will be livestreamed on Lincoln Avenue’s Facebook page. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 pm that afternoon at Bellevue Memorial Park, 1240 West G St, Ontario, CA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Lincoln Avenue Community Church, either on this website or by bringing or sending a check to LACC.
