Edward's obituary

Edward Selby Pope Jr.

July 2, 1937 – August 10, 2025

Edward “Ed” Selby Pope Jr. lived a life rich with curiosity, purpose, and joy. He passed away peacefully at his home in Turtle Rock, Irvine, California, on August 10, 2025, at the age of 88, leaving behind a legacy of service, scholarship, humor, and love.

Born in San Francisco, California, to Edward Selby Pope and Doris Cleona Watson — both theater artists — Ed grew up immersed in the city’s vibrant art community. Surrounded by creative voices, he developed an early appreciation for culture, storytelling, and history, influences that would inspire his curiosity and enrich his work throughout his life.

In his twenties, Ed answered a different kind of calling, serving in the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps during the Cold War. His postings in Wertheim and Berlin, Germany, gave him not only a sense of duty but also a deep love for Europe. Known among his fellow Non-Commissioned Officers for his commitment to the well-being of others, Ed earned recognition for his honorable service during a pivotal chapter in world history.

After his military service, Ed pursued his passion for scholarship, earning a master’s degree in European History from California State University, Long Beach. He became both a historian and an educator, inspiring generations of students with his curiosity, integrity, and enthusiasm for the past. In 1984, he was honored as Orange County History Teacher of the Year, a recognition of his impact in the classroom and his gift for bringing history to life.

In the decades that followed, Irvine became his home and his community. For nearly 50 years, he was a familiar and respected voice in civic life. His most enduring public cause was his leadership in the fight to establish the Southern California Veterans Memorial Park & Cemetery at the Great Park. As founding chair of the citizens’ committee, he rallied neighbors, built coalitions, and championed the vision of honoring veterans on the historic El Toro Marine Corps Air Station site. His determination kept the project alive through political headwinds and earned him the gratitude of veterans, residents, and civic leaders alike. In 2018, he carried that same independent spirit into a campaign for Mayor of Irvine, earning the respect of the community he sought to serve.

Outside the council chambers, Ed could often be found in the boxing gym. A professional coach, he devoted countless hours to mentoring young athletes — especially those from underprivileged backgrounds — encouraging discipline, resilience, and self-confidence both inside and outside the ring.

And then there was the explorer in him. A passionate traveler, Ed especially loved Italy and France, though Italy was always his favorite. In the early 2000s, he spent six weeks in Siena studying, deepening his connection to the country’s history and culture. Provence, too, felt like a second home; he often said he knew it “deeply,” relishing its beauty, easy pace, and unforgettable cuisine. Whether savoring pasta in a small Italian trattoria or lingering over a meal in a French café, Ed embraced each journey with curiosity and joy. At home, he and his beloved wife, Antoinette (“Toni”), shared a life filled with artistry and exploration — traveling the world, ballroom dancing, and attending live jazz performances.

Those who knew Ed will remember his contagious laughter, quick wit, and love of life’s simple pleasures — especially Mexican food, which he adored, and a good glass of wine. He was as devoted to friendship as he was to his causes, and his warmth and integrity left a lasting mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Ed was married to Eva Maria Perez from 1969 until their divorce, and in 2014, he married Antoinette Marie Olivera, his devoted wife who survives him. He is also survived by his sister Heather Pope and many cherished friends and neighbors.
