Edward's obituary
Edward Frank Draugelis, age 97, passed away peacefully at home in Dearborn, Michigan, on May 17, 2025. Born in Grand Rapids on February 1, 1928, Ed lived a life that defied convention—a brilliant mix of intellect, grit, humility, and unmistakable swagger.
A proud veteran of the United States Army, Ed served honorably while stationed in Germany, embodying a sense of duty that carried through every chapter of his life. Upon returning home, he joined the Dearborn Police Department, laying the foundation for a lifetime committed to justice and service.
Never one to settle, Ed earned his law degree from the Detroit College of Law and went on to found the respected firm Draugelis, Ashton, Scully & Haynes. For over 50 years, he practiced law with razor-sharp intellect, unwavering integrity, and a deep sense of fairness. He was not only a fierce advocate in the courtroom but a quiet force of mentorship, lifting others as he climbed.
“Mr. D” was more than a distinguished attorney. He was a storyteller at heart—a published novelist and children's book author who saw the world through a lens of wonder and wisdom. A self-taught harmonica player, he could fill a room with music as easily as he could fill it with laughter. He had a lifelong passion for opera and classical music, and a unique flair for breeding racehorses—because, of course, he did.
Ed was a lifelong learner who carried himself with confidence, yet always led with kindness. He had a gift for making people feel seen, respected, and valued. He was a man of discipline and depth, but also joy and generosity.
Above all, Ed was a devoted family man. He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 45 years, Diane Draugelis (née Popek), who was the love of his life and his greatest partner. He leaves behind a legacy carried on by his 8 children (Mark, MaryLynn (Rick Zwald), Anne (John Dunlap), Krys, Toni (Rich Kinsey), Nick (Samantha (née Morris)), Alex, Sarah (George Yendewa)), 14 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren, all of whom were endlessly inspired by his strength, warmth, and quiet heroism.
To know Edward Draugelis was to witness the rare fusion of brilliance and heart, ambition and grace. He left the world better than he found it—and made sure others knew they could, too.
Details about memorial services will be shared with family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Ed's legacy by learning something new, lifting someone up, or simply doing the right thing—even, or perhaps especially, when no one is watching.
