Ed's obituary
Edward David Smith, 84, of Frederick, Maryland, passed away peacefully on November 05, 2025. A devoted husband, loving father, loyal brother, and cherished friend, Ed touched countless lives with his compassion, humor, and unwavering commitment to social justice.
Born on October 2, 1941, in Philadelphia, Ed was the son of the late John and Elizabeth Smith. He spent his early years cutting a rug at weekend dances in Philly or cruising the beach at the Jersey Shore when he wasn’t working or studying. After graduating top of his class at Northeast Catholic High School and becoming the first in his family to obtain a college diploma at St Joseph’s University, Ed earned his master’s degree from Purdue University.
After grad school, Ed lived in California for fifteen years, where he met his beloved wife, Cassandra. They devoted years to union organizing and the civil rights movement, all while raising their three wonderful children. Ed’s love for family brought them back to the east coast settling in Pasadena, MD to raise their children. They spent the beginning of their retirement in Centreville, MD, before escaping the cold to Sarasota, FL for 10 years. This past June they moved back to Frederick, MD to be closer to family.
For 44 years Ed built a distinguished career as a State Farm insurance agent guiding generations of families through difficult losses with empathy and dedication. His clients became friends and his employees became family.
He was a passionate fan of all Philadelphia sports teams, an avid golfer who often traveled with friends to challenging courses, a member of a weekly pool group, and a happy-go-lucky fisherman. His laugh was riotous and contagious, whether at his own jokes or the punchlines of Seinfeld, SNL & Cheers. A lover of learning, he was constantly devouring books on history, economics, science & politics - always trying to crack the code to a more equitable human condition.
This curiosity about the world led him throughout Europe, South America, the Pacific Northwest and beyond—adventures with Cass that he treasured deeply. Yet, nothing in life brought Ed more happiness than celebrating his children, grandchildren—Stevie, Alex, Hannah, Chloe & Willow—and great-grandchildren, Maryleona and Callahan.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Cassandra; his children, Carrie Boggs (Marc), Julie Vanskiver (Steve), and John Patrick Smith (Jordana); and his siblings Jack, Joseph, Mariel, and Tina. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Matthew and Elizabeth.
Ed’s legacy is one of loyalty, compassion, and courage. He would want us all to remember: love and care for your family, be loyal to your friends, stand against injustice, and above all—be kind.
