Edmond's obituary
We mourn the passing of Staff Sergeant Edmond David Townes, Sr., who left us on October 2, 2024 from his home in Hinesville, Ga, after gracing the earth with his warm heart and noble spirit since November 4, 1958. Edmond's unique blend of wit, infused with humility, love, and care, was a source of joy to everyone who had the privilege to know him.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Michele Townes – his partner since their marriage on June 4, 1983 – and their adoring children; Karla Lane, Edmond Townes Jr.“Mooky”, Shalyn (Perez) Patterson-Thomas, and Kionna Townes. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren: Analeiah Volavong, Zycari Townes, Cyara Brown, and Khaysen and Chayten Patterson. Edmond's family circle expands to include his siblings Cheryl Townes, Diedre (Hank)Townes-Johnson, Michelle Stallings, Ronald (Barbara)Townes, Rodney Townes, and Carl (Kathy)Townes. He is also survived by his many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins & friends.
Edmond was predeceased by his parents, Hannah Willis and Ernest Townes Sr., and his brothers Gregory Townes, Ernest "Buzzy" Townes Jr., Lloyd "Tubby"(Linda) Townes, Jeffrey (Mary Jane)Townes, Gerard (Maggie)Townes, Jack (Doris) Townes, and also predeceasing him was his mother-in-law, Harriet Gorham.
Edmond's journey with the Army began in 1979, and he proudly served until his retirement in 2000. His tours took him and his family to intriguing places like Tampa, FL; Vincenza, Italy; Pirmasens, Germany; Fort Huachuca, AZ; and Fort Gordon in Augusta, Georgia. An accomplished man, his greatest achievements include retiring from the U.S. Army, being a devoted family man, and mastering a range of skills like a true Jack-of-all-trades.
Edmond’s preferences were as multifaceted as his talents. He was a fan of The Persuasions, The Spinners, The Temptations, Earth, Wind, and Fire, the Jackson Five, and Smokey Robinson. He always sang his heart out and danced every chance he got. He relished a variety of foods, coffee, and beer, and enjoyed books such as the Bible. The world of television and movies catered to his tastes with shows like Mash and Sistas, and films like March of the Wooden Soldiers, as well as religious and science fiction genres.
Edmond’s hobbies were a testament to his vibrant spirit. From fishing, camping, and fixing anything and everything, to playing spades, dominoes, horseshoes, darts, backgammon, and even a bit of cheating at Monopoly, he knew how to make the most of his time. He was also keen on suicide prevention and supported AA – causes that reflected his compassionate nature.
Edmond was a loving, caring individual whose memory will forever be engraved in the hearts of those who knew him. His life lessons centered around respect, loyalty, kindness, and patience, forming the core values he wanted his loved ones to uphold. His legacy is that of a strong family foundation, a legacy of kindness and generosity, and a legacy of honor and respect. His magnetic personality and commitment to causing joy made him a person one couldn’t easily forget. Edmond was a very humble, funny, and honorable man who never met a stranger. The love he had for his family and friends continues to live on.
