Edith's obituary

It is with deep sadness that the family of Edith Sandor - Kmetyko announces her passing at the age of 93 years, on Thursday, October 4th, 2018, after a long and courageous battle.
Edith will be lovingly remembered by her only daughter, Anne and her husband Bruno Philip. Edith is also fondly remembered by her two grandsons, Colin, and Julien. Her niece Marika Paquette of Montréal, Québec and her children Yves, Annie and Marc and his wife Josée and their respective children. As well, by her niece in Rhode Island Judith Szilagyi and husband Dezso and family, and including Stephen and Suzanne Szilagyi and Thomas and Melissa Szilagyi of Massachusetts and their respective children. Close family members also remembering Edith include her family in New Jersey: Barbara and Dan Todd and family as well as Audrey De Gaster, Barbara Philips of Switzerland and Bruce and Theresa Philips and family in Brazil and Ronny and Sally Helvey and Barbara Lee in the UK, Melinda and Lajos Klein and family of Budapest, Charles and Heidi Kux-Kardos and family of Vancouver, and Helene Roche and Jean Désy of Chicoutimi. There is also a long list of friends, who meant the world to her who shared time and love with Edith on this journey they call life.
A Funeral Service was held on Tuesday October, 9th, at 1:00 p.m., at Baron de Hirsch Memorial Cemetery.
Born in Keszthely Hungary, her gentle nature and good and generous heart were an inspiration to all who knew her. She nourished people around her with love and she was truly an inspiration. After WWII she left Hungary, alone in 1947 and spent the next four years in Paris studying art at L’Académie de la Grande Chaumière and Académie Julien and worked as fashion sketch artist and taught English. She immigrated to Canada in 1951, via Naples and Halifax and studied architectural drawing at the Monument National. From that moment she arrived in Canada she always considered herself as a Proud Canadian.
She married Joseph Kmetyko on Canada day 1960 and together they became parents to a daughter who they named Anne. An early advocate for vegetarianism and Yoga she opened the eyes of her family to animal rights and social responsibility towards animals.
Edith went back to school later in life and obtained her Bachelor’s of Arts in History from Concordia University and was very passionate and very knowledgeable on the subjects of History and Religion. She spoke 4 languages English, French, Hungarian and German and was pretty good at Yiddish too. She could quote Goethe anytime, and ALWAYS had a joke or anecdote up her sleeve to add to no matter what the conversation was.
Her sharp sense of humour and sense of style inspired many people to call her a “Grande Dame”. She truly was, distinguished, refined and a real mensch. As they say, when they made her they broke the mould. Unique in her “savoir faire” and wit, she will be greatly missed for her “joy de vivre”. Her beautiful soul was resilient and survived several difficult challenges from childhood on through the Holocaust right up until the last moments of her life. Her legacy lives on, in her daughter and grandchildren and in those that loved her.
She is preceded in death by her husband Joseph Kmetyko, her soulmate and her sisters, Margaret Herczeg and Emma Hahn and their parents Eugene and Charlotte Sandor.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Edith’s name to the SPCA, the Canadian Society for the prevention of cruelty to animals:
