Precious Lord, take my hand

This was the song I was sent to sing this week for our church service! This does not happen by accident! In memory of Uncle Ed!

U.S. Senator Cory Booker gave a moving and memorable commencement address at Michael’s 2017 UPenn graduation ceremony. Several phrases from his speech stick with me still today, one being:

“Life is not about how many people show up when you’re dead, but about how many people you show up for while you are alive.”

I will always remember Uncle Ed for “showing up” for us. From responding to my distress call to capture the bat flying around the living room ceiling at the lake, arriving with his clenched-fists raised and tennis racket in-hand, declaring, “have no fear, Uncle Ed is here”; to showing up in his handwritten, Sharpie-lettered “I Like Mike” t-shirt to cheer on 5-year-old Michael at his first youth basketball game; to helping Scott re-sod our front yard (only Uncle Ed would volunteer for that kind of hard labor); to, with Aunt Ellie, graciously hosting so many wonderful Christmas Day celebrations and dinners on the deck in Knollwood; to many meaningful and insightful conversations, day-in an day-out, that demonstrated his deep love and care for each member of our family, Uncle Ed always “showed up” for all of us. We are richly blessed to call him our uncle and will forever cherish his memory.
