Dr. Walter's obituary
Dr. Walter Joel Rubinstein, passed away peacefully of natural causes on July 1, 2018. He was 86 years old.
Son of David and Mazie Rabins and the younger brother of Dr. Richard Rubinstein, Walter was raised in Brooklyn NY. He attended Stuyvesant High School, where he excelled academically and was also captain of the fencing team. After graduating, he went on to study at Columbia University, where he was a starting fencer for Columbia’s NCAA national championship teams in 1951 and 1952.
After graduating from Columbia University School of Dental and Oral Surgery, Walter served as a Dentist in the United States Public Health Service and in the United States Coast Guard. After leaving the service,
he practiced dentistry in New York City until his retirement in 2015.
On December 19, 1954 Walter married his high school sweetheart Marcia Cohen. Walter and Marcia started their family in New York City. Karen was born in 1960 and Mitchell in 1966. In 1970 the family moved to Livingston, NJ, to the home Walter and Marcia would share together for the next 50 years.
In addition to being a highly respected dentist, Walter was also an accomplished photographer and jewelry maker. He took great pride in capturing images of his children and grandchildren, whose photos
filled their home. He also lovingly created beautiful gold jewelry pieces for his loved ones. Walter and Marcia were lovers of the arts in all forms. They took pleasure in sharing those experiences with their family.
Walter lived well and touched so many lives with his skills, knowledge, creativity, humor and generosity. His beloved wife Marcia lived on after his passing until November 4, 2020. Walter is survived by his children Karen Holt and Mitchell Rubinstein, his grandchildren Rachel Logue, Evan Rubinstein and Todd Rubinstein, and his great granddaughter Harper Logue.
