L. Michael's obituary
Dr. L. Michael “Mike” Tompkins
November 25, 1944 to June 17, 2022
Lynn Michael Tompkins was born in Antioch, CA to Chuck and Peggy Tompkins. His sister, Pam, came two years after him. He was active at Las Lomas High School where he made many lifelong friends, was involved with many sports and activities and served as student body president. After a few stumbles along the way, Mike earned his degree from San Francisco State University. He went into the navy where he met and fell in love with Elba in San Juan Puerto Rico. They were married on June 27, 1970. The family eventually settled in Citrus Heights, CA.
Mike spent many years working at UC Davis where he helmed a multi-week business course called, “The Executive Program.” He started his own consulting business called Straight Ahead Management. He authored several books and wrote an observational blog. Late in life, he earned his Doctorate in Psychology from University of the Pacific.
As a clinical psychologist, he worked at prisons and private practice and worked with a wide variety of patients who were dealing with a wide variety of problems. He fell in love with helping people and liked doing live sessions as well as telemedicine.
When not working or spending time with his family, Mike spent a lot of time with
his friends who he referred to as “The Fat Boys.” He was known for his sharp wit, irreverent speech and actions, his love of vehicles, great music from most genres, his stupid human trick of knowing how old almost every celebrity was when they died, and for loving intelligent
conversation on any topic.
In death, he joins his parents, grandparents, brother-in-law Tim, nephew, Jason, many friends and his beloved wife, Elba. He is survived by his children, his sister and his cherished grandchildren, who always made him laugh.
