Jose's obituary
Jose, also affectionately known as Poppy, had a wonderful and fulfilling life. He was born on August 11th, 1934 in Lima, Peru where he grew up. He attended college at San Andres Anglo Peruano followed by the National University of San Marcos. Here he received his medical degree, specializing in Gastroenterology. Seeking opportunity, he moved to the United States in the early 1960s where he started his medical career.
Jose met the love of his life, Sandra Behar, in Providence, Rhode Island in the early 1980s. Jose tells the story of how they met by accident in a restaurant in Providence. It was a real life meet-cute. They married in 1985 and settled down together in Warwick, Rhode Island. Together they formed a large family and a house full of warmth and love, both bringing with them children from their first marriages. Over the years the family would grow, full with grandchildren, family, and friends. Their home was where everyone congregated and Sandra cooked beautiful meals. She brought warmth and love to their home for 33 years until she passed away in December 2018. The house still remains lovingly in the family.
Jose’s career included many accomplishments through his continued passion, hard work, and dedication to his hospital, patients, and students. The majority of his career was spent as a Gastroenterologist at Rhode Island Hospital and as a Medical Professor at Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Through his studies and vast research, Jose made many contributions to the advancements in the field of Gastroenterology. He reluctantly retired at the age of 78.
After the passing of his beloved wife, Jose said goodbye to his family and friends in Rhode Island and made his final move down to South Florida in 2019, to be with his son, Daniel and family. Jose enjoyed this time with his son and grandchildren very much.
Jose was a proud Father and Grandfather. He would brag often of their accomplishments. Jose is survived by two children, Tamara and Daniel (Gretchen). As well as three stepsons, William, David (Susan), and James (Meredith). He leaves eight grandchildren, Eva Sophia, Daniel, William, Caitlin, Colin, Liam, Abigail, and Kate.
Throughout his life he was blessed with good health. But in his final year his health declined quickly. We found out of his colon cancer in his final months and the disease took him quickly. Although he did not fight it, he was brave and proud up to the end. In true form, he did not want to inconvenience anyone. He was so loved that he never could.
Per his wishes, Jose was cremated. However delayed due to Covid, his ashes will be scattered over his wife’s grave in Providence, Rhode Island and later in Israel. His life, legacy, and memory will be cherished and celebrated forever.
