Dr. John "Jack"'s obituary

Dr. John “Jack” P. Dodds died peacefully in his sleep at the Jack Byrne Center, in Lebanon, NH, on November 24, 2019.

Jack was born on August 20, 1931 in Glenwood, Iowa and raised in Clarksburg, West Virginia during the great depression. He recently attended his 65th high school reunion at Washington Irving High School.

Jack attended Yale University on a scholarship, hitchhiking between West Virginia and New Haven each time he travelled home. Jack married Jean Cunningham in 1954. He attended medical school at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1956, then completed an internship and residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Philadelphia General Hospital. Afterwards, Jack served in the military as director of OB-GYN at Plattsburgh Air Force Base in Plattsburgh, New York.

In 1964, Jack joined the Hitchcock Clinic and practiced at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital until 1989. He chaired the Section of Obstetrics and Gynecology from 1967 to 1977 and served for a brief period as Acting Chair of the Department of Maternal and Child Health. He became an Associate Professor of OB-GYN at Dartmouth Medical School and served on the Hitchcock Clinic Board of Directors and Board of Governors. Jack held various offices in the New Hampshire and New England OB-GYN Societies and in the American College of OB-GYN. Jack was active in the development of the Maternal and Child Health outreach programs and he was instrumental in the launch of the Certified Nurse-Midwife program.

Jack was predeceased by Jean Cunningham Dodds, his wife of 27 years, and his sister Joanne Richardson of Morgantown, West Virginia.

In 1983 Jack married Gayle Sittason. After his retirement in 1989, Gayle and Jack moved to St. George Island, FL and later to Eastpoint, FL where they were involved in construction and land development with their company, Green Point Construction.

Jack is survived by his wife of 36 years, Gayle Dodds, three sons John, Tom and Dick and their wives Patti, Bonnie and Missie. He was especially proud of his eight grandchildren, Chelsea Dodds Williamson, Trevor, Tyler, Patrick, Cody, Cooper, Haley and Alex Dodds and two great grandchildren, Charlie and Cody Williamson.

Jack was known for his quick wit and wry sense of humor. Whether it was winter street hockey, whiffle ball or a game of pool his house was always welcoming and the hub of activity. While raising his family in Hanover, Jack supported his sons in all of their activities and athletic events. He could be found on the sidelines of football games, the slopes of a ski jump, in the stands of hockey rinks and baseball stadiums. If his sons were playing, he was there. A natural athlete, who never had the opportunity to participate in organized athletics, Jack became an avid golfer, skier, hiker, and a dedicated sports fan. In lieu of flowers, friends are encouraged to make donations to the Hanover High School Athletic Department, 41 Lebanon St., Hanover, NH 03755. Please make checks payable to Dresden School District. The family is planning an informal celebration of life in the spring.
