My condolences and prayers to the Howard Shelf Family. Howard has been one of my heroes since I met him over 40 years ago. He was an outstanding leader, dedicated family man and a true legend for his time. Looking back, I first met Howard Shelf at a United States Air Force Recruiting Hqts. Conference in San Antonio, Texas during the early 1970's. At the time, I was a young Air Force Captain and Howard was the Air Force Recruiting Command's top Chief Master Sergeant (CMS) for the Minority Officers Recruiting Program. Back then it was rare that a black man could obtain such a high level of enlisted leadership rank in the Air Force. I was very impressed because Howard also carried himself like a military General, always looked professionally sharp, displayed exceptionally high energy and was very young in appearance for such a high ranking individual. He achieved great success at a time when race relations in the American Armed Forces were exceedingly turbulent. However, despite the challenges , his strong sense of moral purpose, talent and readiness to oppose injustices pushed him to excel in the U.S. Air Force, later become a successful businessman in the Real Estate Industry and ultimately enlarge the opportunities and lives of others.

I was so sorry to hear about Dr. Howard Shelf's passing. He was such a Great Mentor to me. He is the reason I became a Realtor. He was a perfect example of success to me. He has so many distinguishing characteristics, it would take pages to list them all. I remember he would say it was about "Building Relationships". Having Integrity and treating everyone fairly and with respect. He would use his children as examples (Marcia/Howard II) for me to see first hand. He was right! They are Amazing of course as is all of his family. My condolences to the Shelf family. He will be greatly missed. I know he is "Building Relationships" in Heaven.

I was very saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Shelf. I met him through his Son Howard and soon came to realize how extraordinary of a Man he is. I read his book and was very impressed by him and his family. He was always very encouraging the times that I encountered him. I pray that God gives his family peace during this trying time. Dr. Shelf’s life will continue to inspire in perpetuity.

My prayers and condolences to the Shelf family. Howard and I first met as neighbors in the NorthCliff community back in the late 70’s. . Later Dr. Shelf assisted with the purchase of our next home. Dr. Shelf also provided choir robes for our Gospel Choir at Dorie Miller Elementary in the late 80’s. Dr. Shelf was an innovator, scholar, and a gentleman.
May he Rest In Peace!
