Douglas Cary Richards, 75 of Ellijay, passed away peacefully in his home on Tuesday, June 17. He spent his final days in his home surrounded by his beloved family. A devoted family man and cherished friend, he leaves behind an unmatched legacy.
Born to a military family in Fukuoka, Japan on January 6, 1950, Doug's journey through life took him across continents. His life was one of service and entrepreneurship. He proudly served as a flight medic in the US Air Force Reserves, where he demonstrated his commitment to helping others and a profound love for skydiving. After his military career, Doug ventured into the world of business, founding Richards Baggage Express Inc. in Miami alongside his father Howard Richards. His entrepreneurial spirit continued to shine as he co-owned Conasauga Timber Frames, Inc. with his son, Stephen Richards, in Ellijay, Georgia.
Family was at the heart of Doug's existence. As a proud father of six and grandfather to eight, he cherished every moment spent with his loved ones. Doug was known for his culinary skills, always ready to whip up a meal for anyone in need. His home was filled with warmth, laughter, and the aroma of his kitchen masterpieces. Even a simple tea party with his grandbabies was a cherished event.
Doug's love for his community was evident through his involvement with the Gilmer County Senior Center, where he dedicated several years post-retirement. His passion for his dogs and his kind, welcoming nature made him a beloved figure in Ellijay.
Doug was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2014 and spent the following years advocating for awareness and participating in trials to improve the treatment of the disease for future generations. In continuation of this legacy began by his father, Doug elected to donate his remains to the University of Florida to further our understanding of this debilitating condition.
Doug leaves behind his partner, Brenda Richards, along with his children: Cherish Twigg (Paul, Nathan of Jacksonville ,Fl), Kerri Henderson (Jon, Grace, Emma, Chloe, Lily of Ellijay, Ga), Daniel Richards (Ellijay, Ga) , Sara Richards (Joshua of Frisco, Tx), and Kaitlin Canote (Darrin, Rosalie, Amelia of Rome, Ga.), Daughter in law, Dakota Richards (Jordan, of Talking Rock, GA), Brothers Howard (Skip) Richards of Hollywood, Fl , Phil Richards of Ocala, Fl and Dean Richards of Monticello, Fl. He joins his son Stephen Richards in eternal peace, as well as his parents Howard and Mabel Richards.
A celebration of Doug's life will be held on June 20, 2025, at Covenant Community Church at 4 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Michael J. Fox Parkinson's Research Foundation.
