Doug's obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Douglas "Doug" Gilroy, who left us too soon on April 3, 2024. Born on April 23, 1955 in Ontario, his life was marked by deep devotion to his family, friends, and an enduring love for his adopted home of Drumheller, AB, Canada, where he resided until 1999. He then moved north first to Eckville, then Rocky Moutain House and finally to Edmonton. The memories crafted anywhere he called home will be a comforting reminder of his easygoing and adventurous nature.

Doug was a beacon of kindness in his daily life, always treating others with patience and compassion. He firmly believed that no one knows what someone else is going through, thus he never failed to extend kindness to everyone around him. This principle of empathy and understanding shaped his interactions and relationships.

The cherished father of Melissa Gilroy, Rhonda Landon, Timothy Gilroy, David Gilroy, and James Stevenson, is also survived by his mother, Helen Gilroy, brothers, Phil, Steve and Norm Gilroy, and all of his beloved grandchildren, Kearra, Cadence and Devon Landon, Thalia, Julia, Luke and Charlotte Gilroy, Zachary and Taija Gilroy, Zayden Stevenson, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and beloved friends.

Doug's legacy of love and wisdom will certainly be carried on by his children, grandchildren and anyone who has ever known him. His father, George Gilroy, predeceased him with whom he shared not just a strong familial bond, but also a passionate fondness for life's simple pleasures. Doug's ability to find joy in the ordinary and his unlimited source of patience, a trait he inherited from his late father, and will be a source of inspiration for us all.

Doug worked for Hi-Way 9 for 36 years. Through those years he lived in many towns and covered every job from Dispatch, Class 1 Driver, Rocky Moutain House Terminal Manager, Westlock Terminal Manager and settled again in Edmonton, AB as Terminal Coverage Manager among many other hats. He was hardworking and passionate about doing any job in front of him to the best of his abilities. He will be missed.

While we mourn his loss, we also celebrate his life, remembering the man who was truly one of a kind. Doug's wisdom, humor, and irreplaceable personality will echo in our hearts and minds, offering solace during this challenging time.
