Dorothy Mary Ann Owen Hamlett, 84, of Leland, North Carolina, died on June 17, 2022 after a short illness.

Dorothy was born on September 12, 1937 to Thomas and Mary Owen in Halifax County, Virginia. The oldest of five children, she quickly became a loving caretaker and learned the importance of family.

Dorothy married James Hamlett in 1958. They had two children together: Sylvia first, then a short sixteen years later, Jason. James passed away in 1983, leaving Dorothy to raise and care for the children. She never remarried.

Dorothy worked in textile mills and agriculture her entire life. Upon retirement, she continued devoting her time to family, caring for four grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and several cats and dogs, including her most faithful companion, Chloe, who remained by her side until the very end.

Dorothy is survived by her two children, Sylvia and Jason (Kimberly); granddaughters, Lacey (Joel) and Jodie (Taylor); grandsons, Ian and Lucas; great-granddaughters, Emma and Hadley; siblings, Roy (Bettie Ann), Edgar (Lilly), Sallie (Grover), and Thomas (Patsy). She remained close to the entire Hamlett family, who treated her as their own from the moment James brought her home.

To celebrate her life, there will be a gathering of family and friends on Sunday June 26, 2022, from 3pm to 5pm, at the home of her brother, Thomas Owen, in Halifax, Virginia. A private burial will take place at Ellis Creek Baptist Church sometime thereafter, where she will reside next to James, reuniting after 39 years.
