Doris's obituary

Doris Piper passed away peacefully on December 10, 2022 at the age of 99. Doris was born on July 1, 1923 in Canton, Ohio to Romanian immigrants Mike and Zanovia (Ungurean) Cantor. She graduated from Shalersville schools where she was a star basketball player. She met the love of her life, Gus Piper, while on a double date rollerskating, and eloped and married on September 4, 1942 in Kentucky. Thereafter, she went to live in San Diego, CA where Gus was stationed  in the army for several years during WWII.

After the war ended, Gus and Doris returned to Ravenna to be near relatives and start a family. They raised two children, Gary and Susan. They briefly lived in Cuyahoga Falls until they had their house built in 1955 in Northampton Township.

She worked in numerous jobs throughout her lifetime including being a nanny, coffee shop waitress, making airplane parts at Ryan Aircraft in San Diego, basketweaving by hand, dry cleaners, making party balloons at a rubber factory, a seamstress sewing surgical garments, making coils in a machine shop, and Clarkins department store.

Doris was a gifted artist and painted numerous pictures with Gus. She also loved working with ceramics. A lover of flowers, she had beautiful gardens surrounding her home.

After Gus passed, Doris moved to a beautiful apartment in Winchester, CA to be near her daughter . She enjoyed the wonderful weather year round. She loved living in CA and loved to shop, dine out and gamble at the multiple casinos nearby. Doris was an avid reader and continued to enjoy the newspaper cover to cover, magazines and fiction. She enjoyed researching topics on the internet and being active on social media well into her late 90's. 

Doris was preceded in death by her husband Gus Piper, infant son Douglas Piper, sisters Helen Shaffer, Madaleine Heritage, and brother George Cantor. She is survived by daughter Susan (Ed) Phillips of Winchester, CA, son Gary (Connie) Piper of Winchester, ID, grandchildren Michelle Higley, Andrea Piper-Wentland, Matthew Phillips, Daniel Phillips and great grandchildren Austin Piper, Seaonna Piper, Ella Piper, Gavin Higley and Ava Higley.

A Celebration of Life will be held in the Spring of 2023.
