Doreen's obituary

Doreen Ann Hamilton-Malcolm, a woman defined by grace, strength, and quiet elegance, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2026, at the age of 72, with her son and daughter by her side.

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Doreen carried the richness of her Jamaican roots throughout her life, while also embracing the refined influence of her childhood and formative years in England. Her life in New York spanned many years between the Bronx and Westchester County before she relocated to Florida in 2021. She was a woman of poise and presence, graceful, dignified, and deeply intentional in how she moved through the world. To know her was to experience love, warmth, beauty, and a quiet calm that followed her into every space she graced.

Doreen was intelligent, composed, and intentional in her work and in her daily life. She approached everything she did with thoughtfulness and precision, carrying herself with a quiet confidence. She dedicated 29 years of her career to Drew Industries in White Plains, New York, where her professionalism, reliability, and strong work ethic left a lasting impression. She was also a devoted member of Butler Memorial Methodist Church in the Bronx, where she worked quietly behind the scenes for many years, offering administrative support, showcasing her creativity, and contributing her time and care to the church community.

In her earlier years, Doreen loved sewing and spent countless hours making clothing, often for her children, with care and pride stitched into every piece. She had impeccable penmanship and practiced calligraphy, a reflection of her attention to detail and the pride she took in even the smallest things. She was an avid DIYer, and her home was her canvas, an extension of her creativity, care, and eye for beauty. She found joy in creating, in bringing beauty into everyday life, and in making her home a place where others felt welcomed and at ease. And, perhaps a quiet nod to her English roots, she always appreciated a good cup of tea. Though naturally reserved, she had a vibrant spirit, a memorable laugh, and a quiet way of drawing people in.

Her life was a reflection of resilience and grace. She lived by the belief that “it is what it is,” embracing life’s challenges with acceptance and strength. She carried herself with dignity, always a lady, composed, thoughtful, and grounded in who she was.

In 2016, Doreen was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Throughout the years that followed, she was lovingly cared for by her son and daughter, who surrounded her with unwavering love, patience, and devotion. Even as her condition progressed, she maintained the essence of who she was, her gentle spirit, her grace, and her ladylike presence remained evident to all who knew her.

Above all, Doreen was a devoted mother and grandmother. She was deeply committed to her children, creating the best life she could for them and intentionally exposing them to new experiences and opportunities, while creating a space where they could grow and thrive. When her grandson was born, he quickly became her pride and joy, and she cherished every moment she spent with him. She raised her children with discipline and love, instilling values of education, perseverance, and integrity. The life she built through love, sacrifice, and intention continues to live on in them.

Her legacy is one of grace, strength, and quiet devotion. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Doreen is survived by her loving mother, Pearl Hamilton; her daughter, Dawn Laing-Wise; her son, Tyler Malcolm; and her cherished grandson, Marlin Wise Jr. She is also survived by her sisters, Yvonne Russell and June Hamilton; her brother, Fitzroy Hamilton; her sister-in-law, Marjorie Hamilton; and a host of beloved relatives and dear friends who will continue to honor her memory.

She was predeceased by her father, Rudolph Hamilton.
