Doreen's obituary

Our family is saddened to announce the passing of Doreen Bannister. She lost her nearly five year battle with cancer on December 19. Thankfully, she was surrounded by family, and while we are heartbroken, it was a peaceful end to her suffering.

Doreen was 69 years old, and spent over 40 of those years with her husband, Rick. She worked as a bartender, switchboard operator, and bookkeeper, all in south Florida. She spent many afternoons in Dania and Hollywood, watching jai-alai, dog racing, and horse racing. She was a Florida Marlins baseball fan since their debut, loved musicals, and Charlie Chan and Sherlock Holmes mysteries. And she attempted to watch every. single. event. during each Olympic Games. Doreen loved doing jigsaw puzzles, crocheting, and was fascinated by every new kitchen gadget she saw. A voracious reader in recent years, she devoured cozy mysteries from a wide variety of authors, and was always on board for a Harry Potter movie marathon. She spent most of her life in Florida, but never forgot her Staten Island roots, and spent time online, swapping stories with classmates and friends from “the old stomping grounds”.

We are infinitely grateful for the guidance, support, and compassion of her doctors and hospice care team. They were instrumental in helping us make her as comfortable as possible during her final months.

Doreen joined her parents and sister in heaven. She leaves behind a community of loving friends and family that includes her husband Rick (Palm Coast, FL), sister Dianne (Oakland Park, FL), daughters Pam Russ-Jackson (Elgin, TX) and Darla Shannon (Maryville, TN), and many in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
