Donald's obituary

Donald J. Weaver, a cherished resident of Westerly, Rhode Island, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 2nd, 2024, at the Hospice of Westerly Hospital at the age of 70. Born to the late Joseph and Sophie Weaver, Don was the beloved life partner of Kathy O’Connell McGrath for 34 years.

Growing up in Dumont, New Jersey, Don received his education in Catholic schools before venturing to St. Louis, Missouri, for college. He later returned to the New York/New Jersey area, where he spent the majority of his working life. Most of Don’s work was in the trades, particularly painting, but he also spent time dealing table games in NYC clubs, selling goods on the streets of Manhattan and later as a chauffeur.

Don’s passion for life was evident in his interactions with others, especially children and grandchildren whom he adored. He found joy in the simplicity of home, often spending his time fixing things around the house and reveling in the company of his dogs Max, Jude, and Leroy.

A natural conversationalist, Don had a gift for engaging people from all walks of life in meaningful discussions about the intricacies of existence. Known for his selflessness, he was always willing to go above and beyond to support those around him, offering his assistance with unwavering enthusiasm and without complaint.

Don is preceded in death by his brothers Joseph and Clifford, and he is survived by his sister Laura Haywang. He is also survived by his loving Sister in-law and brother in-law, Joan and Matt Smyth and nephews Brian and Daniel.

He leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness through his children: Joseph Weaver and his partner Shaylene, Katie Swarthout Weaver, and Juston Weaver, as well as his stepson Matt McGrath and his partner Heather.

His memory will forever be cherished by his six grandchildren: Charlotte Weaver, Violet and Wren McGrath, and Lilian, Maverick, and Charlotte Rose Swarthout. Don’s presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him, but his spirit of generosity and compassion will continue to inspire those he touched.
