My Dad
By: Pamela Miller
My world got a little emptier today
You see my dad he passed away
He’s not the dad that gave me life but he's the one that stayed and tried.
I fought him at every turn and he won my heart was simple words
“You’ve turned out okay girl” means I love you and daughter I am proud of you.
It is a pride I know today I'm his kid in so many ways
People tell me that I'm like him the strength, the fight, the unapologetic way, the sassiness as he would say.
His journey in the physical form has ended today like closing a door
But don't you worry I'm here to say he's with us all in wondrous ways.
I'll carry him on my journey with me
He’s in my heart so blessed I'll be.
If I listen with my heart I can hear him talking:
I'm in the wind listen!
I'm in the creek listen!
I'm in the trees listen!
I'm in the wild listen!
I'm in the sunshine listen!
I'm in the rain listen!
I'm in the earth listen!
Holy crow even from there he's still telling me what to do.
I'll answer, I always talk back.
Dad I'm listening, but first let me explain that I'm not arguing I'm just telling you why I'm right.
I want to thank you for the arguments, the teaching, the preaching ( about absolutely everything), the laughter, the tears( even these ones), the stubbornness, the lectures( I give family meetings now too), the rescues, and the holidays.
Thank you most of all for the love and time that you put in, because one day I turn out okay, I love you and will coin your phrase “bye-bye for now” dad.
P.S. Dad if you're done with your soapbox could I have it?
