Donald's obituary

Donald Richardson, 82 of Greenville, transitioned on Wednesday, July 1, 2020. Graveside services will be held Thursday, July 9, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. at Oaklawn Cemetery under the direction of Dillon Funeral Home, Leland, MS. Donald was from Cleveland, Mississippi where he graduated from East Side High School in 1958. He excelled in athletics. Alcorn State University took notice of his talent and offered him a basketball scholarship. Donald lettered for Alcorn in both basketball and track his freshman and sophomore years. He was drafted in 1960 by the United States Army and served for 2 years. While serving as a sergeant in the 5th Infantry Army Division, Donald made the basketball and track teams. He returned to Alcorn in 1962 and continued his athletic excellence as he attained awards for All-Conference for the SWAC in both Basketball and Track where he did the High Jump.

Donald attained a B.S. degree from Alcorn and a Master’s Degree from Tennessee State University. He taught Health and Physical Education for Leland (MS) School District until he retired in 1993. He coached all sports there, winning Delta Valley Conference titles and championships in track and basketball. He took pride in his relationships with students and continued to enjoy the impact of that mentoring throughout his life.

He was a member of Saint Mathew A.M.E. Church and the Washington County Alcorn State University Alumni.

Golf and billiards were hobbies that Donald enjoyed to the fullest. He was often noted for his skill on the golf course and on the pool table and participated and won awards in many tournaments in both endeavors.

He was born on December 22, 1937 to Nola Winters and Charlie Richardson. Donald was surrounded by the love of his family. He is survived by his wife of 56 years Veronica Levison Richardson a son Donald Anthony Richardson (Felicia) of Little Rock, AR and daughter Dr. Nicole Renee Richardson of Washington, D.C. He also will be remembered lovingly by numerous family members and friends.
