Don's obituary

In Loving Memory of Don Hughes

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, Donald Ray Hughes, who peacefully departed this life on June 9th, surrounded by family and love.

Born on May 13, 1940, in Mountain Park, Oklahoma, Don spent 85 memorable years bringing joy to those around him. He was known for his warm smile, his wiggly ears that never failed to get a laugh, and his stories from “back in the day” that made everyone feel right at home.

He was the heart of our family — always ready to help anyone in need, whether it meant mowing your lawn, changing a tire, or offering a quick prayer. A man of routine and quiet generosity, he was a thrifty shopper, a creature of habit, and a loyal fan of Dr. Pepper and Blue Bell ice cream.

Don was preceded in death by his father, Clarence Hughes; his mother, Ruby Hughes; and his brother, Thomas “Tommy” Hughes.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Caroline Hughes, and their three children: Teresa Spencer and her husband, John, Michael Hughes and his wife, Gwyn, and Laura Blackwell and her husband, George.

Don’s legacy continues through his six cherished grandchildren — Stacy Spencer, Jade Hughes, Natalie Rubenkoenig, Brooke Kemp, Jordyn Conner, and Lauryn Blackwell — and four adored great-grandchildren: Liam and Mason Rubenkoenig, Wesley Kemp, and Riley Conner. As well as his brother, Galen Hughes.

Each of them carries forward the love, wisdom, and values Don so generously shared throughout his life.

A celebration of Don’s life will be held on Saturday, June 28th at 10am at Northeast Baptist Church in Southlake, TX with a luncheon immediately following.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, in remembrance of Don and in support of ongoing efforts to find a cure for the disease that claimed his life.

Though our hearts ache, we take comfort in knowing that Don is now at peace with his Lord and Savior.
