Personal note from From Don's Family

We are heartbroken by the sudden passing of our beloved Don Gay. He was an extraordinary man who brought joy and laughter to everyone he met—a devoted husband, loving father, cherished son, brother, uncle, and friend whose generous spirit touched countless lives.

Don's legacy lives on through the love he shared and the memories he created with all of us. His humor, kindness, and unwavering dedication to his family will never be forgotten.

During this incredibly difficult time, we are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and support from our community. Your kindness means the world to Amelia, Clive, Charlie, and Claire, as well as Don's family and Amelia's family.

Please bookmark this page and check back regularly for updates on memorial services and ways to support Amelia and the children as they navigate this challenging journey ahead.

Update: The Don Gay Scholarship Fund

We wanted to share something really special that’s been created in Don’s honor.

Arlington United Baseball — the community where Don, Clive and Charlie spent so many wonderful years — has established The Don Gay Scholarship Fund. This fund reflects Don’s love for the game, his constant support for every player, and his belief that baseball should be accessible to everyone.

Don was such a positive presence — always encouraging the boys, cheering from the stands, and giving his time and energy to the team. He cared deeply about helping others, and this fund is a beautiful way to continue that spirit.

The goal is to raise $20,000 this year, which will provide scholarships for five families who need help covering their baseball fees. So far, over $8,000 has been raised — an amazing start, but they still have a ways to go.

If you’d like to honor Don’s memory by supporting something he cared so much about, you can make a tax-deductible donation:

We’re so grateful for all the love, messages, and kindness we’ve received. Your support means the world to our family — and knowing that Don’s spirit will continue to help kids play the game he loved is such a comfort.

Thank you all for helping keep his memory alive in this wonderful community!

Update from Sept. 6, 2025

Dear Friends and Family,

As we reflect on these past two months since Don's sudden passing, our hearts are overwhelmed with gratitude for the love and support we've received from all of you. Your kindness, generosity, messages, visits, meals, hugs, and constant presence have lifted us in ways we can never fully express. Thank you for walking beside us during this incredibly difficult time. In these two months, we’ve faced some emotional "firsts" without Don by our side—our annual beach vacations to Fenwick Island, DE and the OBX, the kids' first day of school, Charlie started at Gonzaga as a freshman alongside Clive as a junior, Amelia's birthday, and Clive’s 16th birthday. Each of these moments was heavy, but they were also filled with love, memory, and strength—thanks in large part to all of you.

We also have some joyful news to share. On Clive’s 16th birthday—just one day after the two-month mark of Don’s passing—we welcomed a new little member to our family: Dusty Waffles Gay, a sweet poochon puppy. Dusty, named to honor Don as he always used “Dusty Salman” as his poker name….the name of his first pet and the street he grew up on. Being one of 13 kids meant there was no room for an animal in the Gay home, but just briefly Don’s older brother brought a dog home as their pet, needless to say Dusty didn’t last long. Waffles because Don was the only one who could make Claire waffles her way!! Dusty has brought a spark of joy and laughter into our home, and we like to think Don had a hand and some eye rolling in sending him to us just when we needed him most.

Thank you, truly, for surrounding our family with so much love. We feel it every single day.

With love and gratitude,
Amelia, Clive, Charlie and Claire Gay

Update from July 13, 2025

We wanted to provide an update on transportation and parking for the Funeral Mass and Celebration of Life of Tuesday, July 15th. We are expecting up to 500 guests for the Funeral Mass so we encourage our friends and family to plan accordingly. Doors to the church will open at 10 AM and the Funeral Mass will begin promptly at 10:30 AM.

Funeral Mass Transportation & Parking:
Parking in Georgetown, where Holy Trinity Church is located, is challenging. There is street parking but it may take some time to find a spot. There are no public garages. Georgetown Visitation School has offered to lend our guests their parking lot for the funeral. The entrance to the school is at 35th & Volta, or 1524 35th St NW, Washington, DC 20007. You may park in any visitor spot on the campus. From there you will need to walk to the church. Please allow ample time on Tuesday to find a parking spot either on the streets or in the Georgetown Visitation lot. Alternatively, we encourage Lyfts, Ubers and rideshares.

Washington Golf & Country Club Parking:
There will be valet available at the Celebration of Life at Washington Golf & Country Club directly following the Funeral Mass.
