Diane's obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Diane Rodecker, a devoted mother, cherished sister, dedicated educator, and insightful writer. Diane passed away peacefully in her sleep on February 26, 2025.
Born in Washington D.C. on November 28, 1943, to Commander Frank George (US Navy) and Stella George, Diane's early life was shaped by the experiences of a military family. She and her sister, Vicki, spent their formative years in Long Beach, California, where she was among the first graduating class of Millikan High School. Diane's passion for learning led her to the University of Southern California, where she earned degrees in Education and Spanish in 1964.
Diane married Wallace Rodecker III in 1964, and together they raised four children: Wallace IV, Angela, Roger, and David. Her commitment to education was evident in her long and impactful career as a teacher at St. Bonaventure Catholic School in Huntington Beach, where all four of her children attended.
Following the tragic loss of her son, Roger, Diane found a powerful outlet for her grief and advocacy through writing. For over a decade, she penned "The Challenger" column for the Orange County Register, where she became a voice for individuals with disabilities, offering resources, support, and hope. Her writing was marked by her sharp wit, clever puns, and a deep sense of empathy.
Diane's intellectual curiosity extended beyond her writing. She was an avid chess and Scrabble player, a passionate dancer, and a lifelong aviation enthusiast, even earning her pilot's license. She embraced life with an adventurous spirit and a thirst for knowledge.
In her later years, Diane faced the challenges of dementia, but she remained surrounded by the love and support of her family. Her commitment to education continued to be a legacy for her family. Her children pursued higher education, with Wallace graduating from Vanguard University, Angela from Chapman University, and David from both UCLA and USC. Grandchildren Shane and Jordan followed in her footsteps, attending USC.
Diane is survived by her loving children, Wallace IV, Angela, and David, her dear sister, Vicki, and her extended family. She will be remembered for her unwavering dedication to education, her insightful writing, her infectious humor, and the profound impact she had on the lives of those around her.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Diane's memory to the Rodecker Foundation https://RodeckerFoundation.com, a non-profit foundation that supports Roger Rodecker Memorial Scholarship which Diane started.
