Dewell's obituary

Dewell Oval Edwards, a beloved husband, father, friend, and community pillar, transitioned on June 5, 2025 at the age of 96 in The Villages, Florida. Born on May 18, 1929, Dewell lived a remarkable life marked by service, dedication, and joy.

Influenced by a strong Christian family upbringing, Dewell was a member of the New Hope African Methodist Episcopal Church in Summerfield, Florida, where he served as Vice President of the Sons of Allen, formed for the purpose of encouraging other men to accept Jesus as Lord and Savior.

A proud Veteran of the United States Air Force, Dewell served his country with honor and integrity. He retired after 23 years of illustrious service as SMSGT. He followed this by using his GI bill to enter college and earning an Associate Degree. He became a Distribution Manager for DC Public Schools where he ensured countless students and educators had the resources they needed to thrive. He retired after 40 years of dedicated service. His professional journey didn’t stop there. He formed a Real Estate Partnership with his wife, Hilda, and they earned the successful distinction of helping families find not just houses but homes.

Dewell lived his life with energy and passion. He loved bowling, golfing, fishing, dancing, listening to music, cruising, and playing cards with friends and family. He was a member of The Sophisticated Gents of America Club, and The African American Club of The Villages. These organizations provide social and cultural activities and promote scholarships to deserving college bound students. His laughter was contagious, and his zest for life inspiring to all who knew him.

Known for his unwavering work ethic, warm spirit, and sharp mind, Dewell will be remembered as a man who lived fully, and gave generously. His legacy will continue through the many lives he touched both professionally and personally.

Dewell enjoyed spending time with his family as a loving and ddevotedhusband, son, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Dewell was the son of Willie Henry and Ethel Smith Edwards, living in Union Hall, Virginia. He is survived by his wife: Hilda, of The Villages, FL, three daughters, Yolanda, of Bowie, MD, Pam (Anthony) of Cincinnati, OH, Teneta (Chris), of Alpharetta, GA and four sons Ronald (Cheryl), of Temple Hills, MD. Kenneth of The Villages, FL, Jay (Daphne), of Rocklin, CA. and Derrick (Tonya) of Brandywine, MD, Sixteen Grandchildren: Demiyal, Kwaylon, Zehran (Marcus) Sunevah, Kayona, Auriana, Aliyah, Anthony Jr, Justin, Arianne, Andrew, Rashad, Brittany, Malik, Chris Jr, and Chance and two great grandchildren, Reginald, Jr and Zaira. Dewell, is also survived by one sister, Velather of Lafayette, CA. and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church members and lifelong friends.

Dewell was preceded in death by his three sisters, Fannie, Rachel, and Annie; and five brothers, Lee, Elbert, Ivan, Joseph and Benjamin.
