Devon's obituary
We regret to announce the passing of our dearest son, brother, partner, friend, and joy of our lives. Our bright and colourful Devon Riley Steven Kivell passed away suddenly on Sunday, January 5.
Although Devon was only 23 years old, he was mature beyond his years. He was always quick with a joke and would brighten up any room he entered. Devon was intelligent, handsome, and most importantly he had a heart of gold - it has been said that he was the “whole package”.
Anyone who crossed Devon’s path loved him wholeheartedly, and he always gave the same amount of love back in return. Devon had such an incredible group of friends, ranging from elementary school through to university. When asking his partner, Julia, who Devon’s best friend was, she responded “He would always say ‘They are all my best friends.’”
Devon was an extremely driven and motivated individual with a constant eye on the prize. He was an entrepreneur at heart. He started his own business at 21 called Monophone while attending Queen’s University for Engineering, which in itself helped pay for his education. Devon later used his knowledge and experience to start a career with SciWise in the field of Nuclear Detection, which allowed him to travel all over the world. Devon beat out some of the best and brightest to earn his position in this field, it was greatly deserved. The owner of SciWise made a point of saying he was “a big fan of Devon”.
We were all fans of Devon - how could you not be? If you needed anything he was there in a heartbeat. He was sensitive and courteous (on account of having three sisters). He was a natural-born leader and he was always the life of the party. He will be missed by so, so many, including his partner, Julia and her amazing family, who welcomed him in and treated him as a son. His big sisters, Samantha and Jessica, along with their partners Chris and Steven. His little sister and future fellow engineer, Katrina. And lastly, his proudest parents, Steve and Maria, who even through this tragedy consider themselves incredibly lucky to have had him in their lives. Devon will also be missed by his three pets, Milo, Prince, and Beanie who adored him greatly.
Devon leaves behind a much loved and large family. His grandmother and grandfather, Virginia and Fred Kivell, and Nonna, Guilia DeMarinis. Uncle Tim and Aunt Erin and their children Whalen, Ryan, Abigail and James. Uncle Mike and Aunt Natalie and their children Randall, Eric and Corrina. Uncle John and Aunt Rose. Uncle Brian. Zia Patricia and Uncle Chuck and their children Natalie, Patrick and Sabrina. Zia Pina and her children Sarah, Kathryn and Kirsten.
