DeVaughn's obituary
Dr. DeVaughn Christian Petersen, age 92, passed away peacefully at home on January 23, 2021 in Redlands, California.
Son of Ivan and Edith Petersen, DeVaughn was born in Brigham City, UT on January 19, 1929. He attended Box Elder High School (class of 1947) where he played on the state championship football team two years in row. He also played basketball. He went on to attend Utah State University (1957) where he played on the football team and graduated with a Bachelors of Science in 1957. He also received a Masters of Science from Utah State University in 1959. He completed his formal education at the University of Southern California by earning his Doctorate of Education.
DeVaughn served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the British Mission. (1950-1952) He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from 1952-1954. DeVaughn also served as a Gospel Doctrine and seminary teacher, as the Bishop of the San Bernardino 1st Ward, the Stake President of the San Bernardino California Stake and in the mission presidency for the San Bernardino California Mission. He worked for the Church Educational System for 28 years.
DeVaughn married the love of his life, Colleen Farmer Petersen, in the Logan Utah Temple in 1957. He loved traveling with Colleen, sports, jigsaw puzzles, reading, learning, teaching, gardening, and spending time with his family.
DeVaughn is survived by his wife Colleen, his children Geneil (Terry) Vines, Kylene (Fred) Purcell, Annette (Lance) Hairgrove, Christian (Bronwyn) Petersen, 15 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, his sister Frances Hunsaker, and his brothers Richard and Jimmy Petersen. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sisters Anne Marie Detamore and Sandra Haramoto.
Memorial services will be held at The Grove of Redlands, 1275 E Pioneer on February 19, 2021 at 4pm. Interment will be at Riverside National Cemetery.
