My deepest condolences go out to the Moffett family as they mourn the loss of Derek, Catherine and Patricia. They are gone too soon and will be missed greatly.

I was so sorry to hear about tragic deaths of Derek, his beloved Mother Patricia and beloved daughter Catherine. Derek will be remembered by me as a generous, kind, fun person who always seemed to find the positive in situations and the good in people. He was inspiration to me to try to do the same. He had the ability to create a real sense of friendship and community at our workplace. He was always planning and inviting others to take part in lunches, cookouts, baseball games and made everyone feel welcome. He was a loving Husband and Father who took such great pride in sharing his family's accomplishments and and the events of their lives. Derek is right up there with one of the nicest people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing and I will miss him greatly.

Wanted to share and old email I got from Derek in November of 2019 after they settled in Colorado. He was always so proud and passionate when talking about his family. He updated me on each of them, just as he always inquired about each our individual family members in conversation. He was a good sharer, and an even better listener.

Subject: New Position
Hey Justin,
I wanted to offer my congratulations to you on becoming Service Manager. I wanted CSC to promote from within and it makes me happy they rewarded your hard work and dedication.
I have absolute faith in your abilities to perform any task that they give you. I have always thought that the Sky was the limit with you. Keep up the good work.
We are having fun here. I like our location. We are 20 minutes from Boulder and about 30 from the airport and downtown Denver. Alexandra is in High School and played volleyball this year. These are big steps for her and we see her growth and that is good to see as a parent. Catherine is in 6th grade and is just now starting to make some good friends. She is in the ballet in Denver and will have 3 roles in the Nutcracker this year. She loves ballet. We don’t like the drive…
We are close to trails that will go almost anywhere in the metro. We run and ride on those trails. There is a city singletrack park for mountain bikes that is about 2 miles from our house. The trails there are fun but they are limited and there is no tree cover. I’ve been skiing a few times already. Road cycling is fun and I have a few guys in the area I can ride with. Things are coming together.
Laura committed to racing on a team next year. That is good news. I think she’ll enjoy getting to know the other ladies that like to go fast.
Say Hi to everyone there. Say Hi to Sarah.
It is awesome to hear you have the new position. Great for Jake and CSC as well. Say Hi to Jake for me. Cool guy…
Thanks,
Derek

Derek was as quality a human as you will find. When I started working at CSC, he was one of the first ones to welcome me and make me feel like I was part of a team when I had no idea what I was doing! His kind and cheerful heart made an impression on everyone that had the pleasure of crossing paths with him. After he left for Colorado, I always looked forward to seeing him when he would come back to the office to say hi. Dixon's Chili definitely lost money on the all you can eat tacos. The Olive Branch and Legends of Asia didn't fare very well either...man could eat!!!

I worked with Derek at CSC for only a short period of time before he left for Colorado but he left a lasting impression on me. He was one of the most cheerful, kind and helpful people that I have ever known. I was interested in hiking and colorado outdoor activities and Derek was always willing to take the time to talk me through anything from where to go to what type of shoes to wear. Even after he moved he was willing to coach me and to answer questions over Facebook and send me in the right direction. He will be missed and I want to make sure that his family knows that if there is any way that I may help please let me know. My family are keeping you and your girls in our prayers and thoughts and we are sorry for your loss

My condolences to Laura, Alexandria, Susan and family. Derek truly was a warm soul and will be deeply missed. His style was timeless and is rarely matched in this world. I will never forget the deep conversations regarding family, music, faith, Mizzou/KU banter, frustration with BACnet integration, and last but not least...food. The Legend's of Asia buffet lost money when Derek visited!
The world lost a great one in Derek. As a Mizzou grad I have never cheered for that team out west, but for you my friend...Rock Chalk Jayhawk.

My condolences to Derek's family. Derek entered my life at a crucial moment. We worked together at a bike shop while I was still in high school. Fresh out of college, he and his wife had moved from Kansas to Albuquerque, attracted by job opportunities and the bike racing scene. We quickly became close friends, and I looked up to him. Our conversations during long training rides and while working on bikes helped guide me in the right direction. Sometimes, you need just one person in your life whom you don't want to disappoint to make the right choices—Derek was that person for me. He was the closest I ever came to having a big brother and the family I needed when I felt so alone.
I will forever remember our conversations and the grueling training rides we shared. I will miss you dearly, brother. You were so much more than just a friend.

I met Derek in 2015 right after my family and I relocated to KC from Houston. I worked with him at CSC and right after I started, him and I had an OSHA class together downtown. I remember how welcoming he was to me and how he was excited for me and my family to get to experience the town that he loved so much in KC. He bounced question after question off of me and made what otherwise would have been a boring OSHA class bearable. He always had a smile on his face in the office and could brighten your day just by walking by.

He’ll be missed immeasurably and is still warmly remembered from his days at KU and in Lawrence. Sending lots of support to his family in the coming months.

My condolences to Derek's family and especially Laura and Alexandria. Stay strong and may God's strength lift you up in this difficult time. I first met Derek way back in school when we did scouting, sports, and growing up together. I got to meet up with Derek and Laura several times over the years at gatherings with friends and high school reunions. What an amazing, caring, fun, goofy, and good person Derek was! He will be missed by so many and I will be praying for you both, Laura and Alexandria.

Derek, Laura and the girls met me at the lake for a day of tubing/skiing. After he had gotten settled in a cove, and eaten some lunch, I asked the girls if they were gonna get in the water. Like normal kids their age, they refused because who know what could be lurking deep in that brown water. Both girls had their PFDs on of course.
I winked at Derek and pitched Alexandria right in the drink! The look on her face was priceless....She was so mad, but it was only a matter of time when all the family was tubing. We ended up having an absolute blast!

Derek and I were skiing down the last run of the day. He of course showing off with his telemark style skiing. We get no more than 10 feet down the mountain on a quick blue and Derek's bindings broke on one leg, and down he went. I got to the bottom and had to send up the ski patrol to recover him. We laughed the whole way to the condo!
