It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Derek Gaskins. Born on March 22, 1993, Derek's story came to an untimely end on January 3rd, 2026 from a car accident. He was a treasured son, brother, uncle, father and friend, whose absence will leave an immeasurable void. Derek is survived by his loving mother, Marie Hooks, his ever-present brother, Timmy Gaskins, his caring sister, Brandi Cassioli, and his cherished family member Tony and Sam. He was a beacon of selflessness and dedication, deeply committed to the cause of mental health. His sense of humor was as comforting and made him who he was as a person, as for his favorite meal, Chicken Parmesan or a Cheeseburger, washed down with a Dr. Pepper. A lover of culture and entertainment, his interests stretched from the magic of the Harry Potter & Game of Thrones books series to the heart-thumping beats of Country Rock and R&B. His favorite TV shows, Supernatural, The Originals, Big Brother and any superhero show, brought him joy, as did the fast-paced action of the Fast and Furious franchise. A fan is someone who sticks by their team through highs and lows, and Derek was a true fan, cheering on the New Orleans Saints, Chicago Bulls, and Boston Red Sox. Recreation for Derek was all about action-packed video games like Call of Duty and Dragon Ball Z, and Need for Speed, as well as outdoor adventures like fishing, hunting, going to the park and working on vehicles. A lover of performances, The Nutcracker held a special place in his heart. He cherished jogging and playing outside with the kids he loved and just being close to nature. The gentle waves of Topsail Beach, the rugged beauty of Cape Hatteras, Salvo, Black Mountains, and the Smoky Mountains were among his favorite getaways. Locally, he loved the beach, mountains, and any type of amusement park. He wore his heart on his sleeve, caring deeply and loving with everything he had. 'Keep trying until your last breath,' he would say, embodying this philosophy every day, whether surviving a gunshot, proving his prowess on the basketball court, or showing up as a devoted father. A fitting tribute to a man who was passionate about mental health and earning a nickname as 'The guy who loved with all his heart. Derek may never have claimed to be perfect, but he strived to be the best he could for those around him, his love for his family was as vibrant as his favorite colors, Black and Carolina Blue. He leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and courage. As we mourn his passing, let's also celebrate his life, just as he would have wanted.
