Derek's obituary

We regretfully announce the passing of Derek Farr, 52, of Boise, ID.

Derek Farr passed away on January 9, 2026. Derek was a beloved friend, brother, son, and a person whose kindness, intelligence, and humor left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Derek grew up in Greeley, Colorado.  He attended Greeley Central High School where he graduated in 1992.  He went on to attend Colorado State University where he graduated with a degree in Technical Journalism in 1998.

His time at college helped hone is wonderful writing ability and continued to foster and instill in him a love for the outdoors and rivers.  He would go on to kayak and raft rivers throughout the United States and Costa Rica.  Derek loved the river, loved the rapids, loved the wild, and loved the remoteness of the wilderness.  His time and travels saw him living in Turrialba, Costa Rica, Oregon, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Wyoming, and finally landing in Idaho.

Derek was quick-witted, incredibly knowledgeable, and endlessly curious about the world around him. Friends often joked that he could answer most *Jeopardy!* questions without hesitation. He was an avid birder and a skilled rafter and kayaker who found joy in nature and in exploring the world with curiosity and enthusiasm.

Many people considered Derek their best friend. He had a rare ability to make people feel seen, valued, and special. Empathetic and deeply thoughtful, Derek cared profoundly about his family, his friends, and the broader community. He was actively engaged in Idaho politics and was a passionate advocate for those whose voices needed to be heard.

Derek was also a phenomenal cook. He had a remarkable talent for looking into a pantry and creating something memorable from whatever ingredients he found. Some of the most cherished memories shared by those close to him were simple evenings spent together over meals he prepared, watching what he liked to call “smart TV” such as *NOVA* and *PBS Nature*, or Saturday mornings enjoying cooking shows together.

Derek had a gift for friendship and for showing up for the people he loved. His humor, warmth, curiosity, and compassion brought comfort and joy to many, and his absence leaves an immeasurable void.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Derek’s honor on **Saturday, April 18, 2026, at 4:00 PM** at the **Old Timers Shelter in Ann Morrison Park, Boise, Idaho**. Friends, family, and all who knew Derek are welcome to attend and share in remembering his life.

Derek will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by the many people whose lives he touched.
