Denzel Keith Riggins

August 4, 1994 – May 28, 2025

Today we gather not in sorrow alone, but to celebrate a life that was deeply lived, a spirit that was brightly shining, and a soul that touched so many of us in profound ways. We come together today to remember and honor Denzel Keith Riggins—our son, brother, nephew, cousin, friend, and beloved member of this world. And though we are overwhelmed by grief, let us also be filled with gratitude for having had Denzel in our lives, even if it was far too brief.

Denzel was, in many ways, larger than life. From the moment he was born on August 4, 1994, in Torrance, California, he exuded energy, warmth, and curiosity. It didn’t take long for anyone who met him to understand just how special he was. His adventurous spirit, his infectious laughter, his deep sense of loyalty—these were all qualities that defined him. And they were evident from a very young age.

Growing up in Federal Way, Washington, Denzel had a heart that was always eager to explore, whether it was the wonders of the natural world or the joy of just living life to the fullest. From his fascination with marine biology to the unicycle he rode in the Puyallup Daffodil Parade, Denzel was never one to shy away from trying something new. He loved the outdoors, the beaches, and the rivers, and he spent his childhood playing T-ball with his cousin Spencer, playing soccer, and always seeking new adventures with a smile on his face.

His work ethic and determination began early too. At 16, Denzel got his first job at WinCo Foods, where he immediately showed his responsibility, his initiative, and his ambition. That Toyota he bought with his hard-earned money was a symbol of his growing independence, his readiness to take on the world. He worked at Starbucks and later at Duke’s in Seattle before moving to Los Angeles, where he continued to pursue his passion for service and making people smile.

But Denzel was more than just hardworking—he was always looking to grow. When he moved to Brazil in 2024, he immersed himself in a new culture, learning Portuguese, teaching English, and working remotely as an online manager. His life in Brazil was everything he’d hoped for—exciting, full of new experiences, and surrounded by the beauty of both nature and the incredible people he met. Every corner of his journey was filled with a sense of wonder, an ever-present joy, and a deep love for the life he was living.

Denzel was more than just a world traveler and an adventurer. He was someone who deeply cared about his family, his friends, and his community. His mom often spoke of how Denzel was always supportive, never asking for much, and always there when you needed him. He had a profound sense of loyalty. To him, home and family were paramount, and he would protect and stand by those he loved, no matter what. His love for his immediate family was fierce, and he never hesitated to defend and support them. He was, above all, a protector of those who mattered most to him.

But Denzel’s heart wasn’t just big for his family—it was big for all of us. He loved with such a pure heart. He was playful, always joking around and making people laugh, but he was also thoughtful and always willing to lend a helping hand. Whether it was a random check-in, a long conversation, or a heartfelt hug, Denzel had a way of making everyone feel important, seen, and loved.

He was also someone who could find joy in the simplest things—whether it was watching a concert, rafting down a river, or just sitting with a friend, enjoying life in the moment. He was adventurous, but he also knew how to enjoy the quiet moments, the peaceful times where connection could flourish.

What Denzel taught us—through his example and his spirit—was how to live fully, how to love without hesitation, and how to embrace every moment as though it were the greatest gift. He truly embodied the joy of living, of discovering new places, new people, and new experiences. And he did it all with an open heart, a courageous soul, and a smile that could light up a room.

As we remember Denzel today, let us remember him not just for his accomplishments or the places he visited, but for the kind of person he was. Let us remember his cheerfulness, his adventurous spirit, his loyalty, and his unwavering love for his family and friends. Let us remember that Denzel lived his life with a sense of wonder, of possibility, and above all, of love.

While we feel the pain of losing him so unexpectedly, we know that his legacy lives on. In each of us, in every laugh, every moment of joy, and every act of kindness that we carry forward in his name. We are his family, his friends, and his village—and we will continue to live with the love he gave us.

Rest in peace, Denzel. You will always be loved, always be remembered, and always be in our hearts.

Thank you.

This eulogy celebrates Denzel’s vibrant spirit, adventurous life, and deep love for his family and friends. It conveys a message of both remembrance and gratitude, while honoring the lasting impact he had on everyone around him.

In Loving Memory of

Denzel Keith Riggins

August 4, 1994 – May 28, 2025

It is with heavy hearts, immense grief, and utter disbelief that we share the sudden passing of our beloved Denzel Keith Riggins, who left this world far too soon on May 28, 2025, at his home in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Denzel was born on August 4, 1994, at Torrance Memorial Hospital in Torrance, California, to Shirley Brown Lahargoue and Brian Riggins. Raised with love and a sense of wonder, Denzel blossomed into an adventurous, compassionate, and deeply thoughtful young man.

A graduate of Decatur High School’s Class of 2012 in Federal Way, Washington, Denzel pursued general education with a strong affinity for Marine Biology, stemming from his lifelong love for animals. He was known for his vibrant personality and zest for life, even joining the Unicycle Club, where he famously rode a five-foot unicycle in the Puyallup Daffodil Parade.

Denzel’s first job, at WinCo Foods in Federal Way as a cart clerk, began the very day he turned 16. From that point on, his drive and work ethic were unmatched. With his earnings, he purchased his first car — a Toyota — and began a life of joyful independence, commuting to school, work, the beach, and beyond.

He later worked as a Starbucks barista, then as a server at Duke’s in Seattle, before moving to Los Angeles in 2017. There, he continued to thrive professionally, joining Jon & Vinny’s restaurant team in both Los Angeles and Brentwood. In January 2024, Denzel courageously followed a dream and moved to Brazil, where he lived life to the fullest.

An adventurer at heart, Denzel embraced Brazilian culture, learning Portuguese, working remotely as an online manager, and teaching English to local students. His passion for life was reflected in everything he did — from attending concerts and posting music clips, to traveling and exploring three of the Seven Wonders of the World — an accomplishment he proudly shared.

Denzel had a natural way of connecting with people. He was playful, outgoing, and kind, with a steady, cheerful disposition. He expected little from others, but gave so much of himself in return — loyalty, love, and unwavering support. He was especially close to his sister, Angelena, and was always protective of her. His mom often said she never had any trouble raising him — a rare and precious gift.

Denzel adored the outdoors, music, dance, and meaningful conversation. Whether rafting rivers, exploring new places, or quietly spending time with family, he approached every moment with curiosity and joy. He cherished the people in his life, forming deep bonds with his village of best friends, countless cousins, and all who knew him.

He is preceded in death by his beloved sister, Angelena Lahargoue, and a host of cherished family members, including grandmothers Helen Grundy and Fannie Thompson ; aunts Shannon Murphy, Sarah Gallardo, and Kellie Grundy; great-aunt Jonette Hood; uncles Barry Riggins and Paul Gallardo; and cousins Spencer Jefferson and Jasmone Riggins.

Denzel is survived by his parents, Shirley and Brian, and a large extended family who will miss his radiant spirit and genuine heart. His beloved cat Mia, who accompanied him to Brazil, was a symbol of his loyalty and gentle care. Denzel lived life on his own terms — full of love, adventure, and purpose. May we carry his light with us always.

Denzel may not have realized it, but he was showing and teaching us something powerful: that true bravery isn't about being fearless. It's about feeling fear and still choosing to try.

It's about stumbling and still choosing to rise. It's about not giving up — not on yourself, not on life, not on your purpose.

Let Denzel’s memory be our reminder that the world doesn't need more perfection — it needs more people willing to keep going when it's hard. More people who lead with heart, who rise after they fall, who dare to believe that their life can mean something. Just like he did. I love you nephew rest in peace xoxo Auntie Shannon 🥰😇❤️
