Dennis's obituary
Dennis Van Drie, 82, of Comstock Park, Michigan passed away on May 8th, 2024 in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family.
Denny was born on August 28th, 1941 to Gerrit and Dorothy Van Drie in Greenville, Michigan. After graduating from Greenville High School, he went on to earn his Associate in Science degree at Davenport Institute in Grand Rapids. From there he had a 30-yr career as a postal carrier with the USPS. He was known by many as the “Whistling Mailman”, a moniker he obtained thanks to his cheerful whistling while delivering the mail.
Denny will be remembered for his infectious smile, his fun, teasing nature, his love of people, along with his passion for horse racing, Tiger baseball, and all things Michigan State. He loved planning and taking epic family vacations which usually led to every waterfall nearby. He was also an autograph hound, mostly getting them in-person, scoping out the hotel or the tour bus and working the scene with managers to get the autograph.
Denny will be missed by his wife of 56 years, Julie Van Drie; son, Todd (Charlene) Van Drie, of Rhome, Texas; daughter, Tami Van Drie, of Key West, Florida; and grandchildren Aubrey, Aidan, Abigail, Joshua, and Gabe. He also leaves behind sisters-in-law Lynn Van Drie of Lowell; Phyllis Mangus of Grand Rapids; and Lynne Stevens of Grant; several cousins, nieces, nephews, and many special friends and neighbors.
Denny was preceded in death by his dad and mom, Gerrit and Dorothy Van Drie; sister, Diane (Midge) Riehl; and brother, Gerrit Greg Van Drie.
The family asks that you consider memorial contributions to the American Heart Association, American Stroke Association, or one of your choice instead of flowers or other gifts.
A celebration of Denny’s life will be held at Aldersgate United Methodist Church – 4301 Ambrose NE, Grand Rapids on Friday, May 17th. Visitation will be from 11am until noon, the memorial service at noon, and a luncheon to follow. All friends and family are welcome. Cremation has taken place.
