Dennis's obituary

Dennis L. Swartz, age 77, passed away peacefully in his home in Anderson, Indiana, on Saturday, August 7th, 2021.

He was born December 10th, 1943, in Mishawaka to Leo Marvin and Helen Virginia (Sponsler/Relicke) Swartz. In 1962, Dennis graduated from Mishawaka High School and attended Purdue University from 1962-1966 on a US Navy ROTC scholarship, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology before being commissioned an Ensign in the US Navy Supply Corps.

On April 8th,1967, he was married to Janet Lynn McCarty in Frankton, Indiana by Rev. Sterret Nash at Frankton Christian Church. He and Janet moved to Athens, Georgia where he graduated from the U.S. Navy Supply Corps School in 1967 and was assigned to the aircraft carrier USS America where he served his country until 1971 before returning to central Indiana.

In 1973, he became a branch manager with General Finance Corporation. His first daughter, Anna Collette, was born in 1975 in Anderson, Indiana. From 1984 to 1988, Dennis worked as a mortgage loan collector for American Federal Savings & Loan Association in Anderson before his second daughter, Ashley Danielle, was born in 1988. He was then employed by Ball State University for 32 years where he held the position of Federal Regulations Analyst & Account Specialist until his passing.

Dennis was a CACUBO Management Institute and Ball State University Certified Training Consultant Institute graduate, presenting at ECSI, CCULAA, FABSAA, KASRO, SUMMIT, SETA, SISU, GRC, and PDG conferences over the span of his career. He was a trustee of the Madison County Historical Society, volunteering alongside his entire family, and a founding member of the Frankton History Club. He was recognized as a Leaders & Loyals donor by Ball State University, where his support contributed to the development of future teachers.

Always a supportive, encouraging, and generous friend, Dennis would drop everything at a moment’s notice to help anyone, particularly his girls. He was the ultimate ‘band dad’, perpetual candy supplier, and technology enthusiast. Dancing with his wife, genealogical research, caring for cats, and feeding every bird in the county were some of his favorite activities.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Janet, children Anna (Scott) Epperly and Ashley (Austin Ockomon) Swartz, and grandchildren Elizabeth Epperly, Nathan Epperly, and Alexander Epperly.

Dennis's wishes were to have no public service. In lieu of flowers, please consider volunteering with or donating funds to the Madison County Historical Society at 15 W. 11th St., Anderson, IN 46016.
