Deb's obituary

Debra Lynn (Herbert) Rumpza, formerly of Lafayette, passed away unexpectedly in her sleep Friday, September 24th in Lakeland, Florida.

Debbie was born December 31st, 1965 in Châteauroux, France to Elizabeth and Max Herbert. She was a military brat before her family settled in Lafayette in 1974. Debbie graduated from Jeff High School in 1984 and served in the Army before attending Purdue. She married Jeffrey Scott Rumpza in 1993, and while they later divorced, they remained best friends. She moved to Lakeland last year to help take care of her father, and immediately made an impact there.

Surviving relatives include son Sam of Indianapolis, Sam’s father Scotty of Lafayette, father Max of Lakeland, FL, brother John of Sequim, WA, and sister Lynette (Marcus) Alexander of Lafayette. Also surviving are mother-in-law Sara Dowden of Frankfort, sister-in-law Jen Rumpza of Boston, future daughter-in-law Sarah Simon of Stanford, CA, and five nieces and nephews (Michael, Zack, Mike, Andy, and Becky). She was preceded in death by her mother Liz and brother Russell.

Debbie was the heart of her family. She gave as much as she could and was the most selfless person you ever met. Deb always looked at the bright side of things. She never met a stranger and loved to talk about her son Sammy Joe to anyone who would listen. She enjoyed old movies, hanging out at the pool, and tending to her garden.

Her family will hold a celebration of life on Sunday, October 17th from noon-4 PM at Columbian Park’s Yellow Shelter #1. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Almost Home Humane Society would be appreciated.
