A beautiful tribute here to an extraordinary man. I know he will be missed by the many, many people he inspired. His spirit will live on through them all.

There is so much I could say about my uncle Dean. When I think of him in my childhood, I think of him at Christmas- dressed up & playing Santa for all of us- & as an excited teacher, giving me fun yet educational presents (a kite that we then flew atop a hill, or a giant bubble maker) & using science to help me (spraying some chemical on the kitchen floor so that I could "breakdance"!). His dedication to science & sailing were steadfast & consistent, and shaped the gifts he offered those around him. I remember his quiet chuckle, and how he was so happy to have the house full of people but was content to be in the corner, observing everyone. I think of his kind eyes, and how what he always ultimately wanted was for systems and science to work to make life better & easier for everyone he loved so dearly. I'm so glad I was able to know him for as long as I did, and to keep the memories of him alive.

Although I only had the privilege of spending limited time with Dean, it was obvious what kind of man he was. He was a lover, not a fighter. Under his intellectual demeanor, I could tell he cared deeply about the world and the people around him. I wish I could have spent more time with him, but I am grateful for the time we got together. I promise to Dean that I will take good care of his granddaughter, knowing he will be with us always.
