Dean's obituary
Dean Collmann: January 16, 1963 - June 30th, 2024
Dean Scott Collmann (Dean-O) passed away suddenly on June 30th, 2024 at the age of 61 in Volente, Texas. Dean was a light in the lives of many, especially his family. The loss of this incredible person has been nothing short of tragic.
Dean lit up a room with his jokes, his genuine curiosity and his appreciation of life. Dean had a heart full of grace and he shared it with everyone he met. Whether you knew him for many years or just met him, he made you feel like a person worth talking to. Dean made friends everywhere he went. Dean was born on January 16th, 1963 in Peoria, Illinois. Dean spent most of his life in Austin, Texas attending Round Rock High School and graduating 1981. He pursued his undergraduate degree in finance at the University of Texas, graduating in 1985. Dean loved working with people throughout his illustrious 50 year career in the telecommunications industry. He met the love of his life in 1990 and spent 33 beautiful years with his wife, Gwen. He was a devoted father and husband, Dean dedicated his life to loving his wife and family. Preparing a glass of wine, a plate of cheese and crackers, and running a bath for Gwen after a long day of work was just one of the many ways Dean routinely showed care for his soulmate. Dean and Gwen built a beautiful life together, full of love, laughter, and community. In 2016, they created a very successful senior photography business, Gwen taking pictures, and Dean making the models laugh. In his retirement, Dean and Gwen with his in-laws, Joyce and Ken Beck, built their forever property in the hills of Volente. He created and managed the horse boarding business at Thistle Dew Ranch.
Dean was a regular at his gym and filled his time happily taking care of the many projects his family bestowed upon him. Dean spent nearly every Sunday trying out new brunch spots with his wife, children, and mother and father in-law. He loved being in nature with the horses, cats, and Bentley–his beloved little dog, but there was nothing Dean loved more than spending time with his family and friends. Whether it was coaching, horseback riding, movies, cooking, cleaning, fixing things, collecting things, Dean was enthusiastically present in every moment. Coaching was especially close to his heart, as he never missed a game and he was totally invested in every kid he coached. It was his happiest moment to coach; he won multiple championships but his heart was happiest for his kids. What made Dean special was how much he cared about everyone, he loved having a house full of friends. Gathering- cooking family meals and celebrating holidays together- was never just small talk for Dean. Get-togethers meant talking about what’s important in our lives, laughing with our bellies and connecting heart to heart. Dean was particularly skilled at getting people singing and dancing. Gwen, Dean and the kids spent many evenings in the kitchen trading songs, singing them to each other and sharing the stories behind them. Dean connected deeply to the world around him and did it with joy.
Dean is survived by his wife and children, Gwen, Jake, Josh and Hannah Collmann. Dean is loved deeply by his in-laws, Joyce and Ken Beck. He is survived as well by his parents, Larry and Fran Collmann, and his siblings Debe Mckeand and Dave Collmann along with their families. To honor Dean’s life, we ask that you step into nature, put on your favorite song, and sing it with all your heart. Anything from Mötley Crüe will do.
