Moms left the dinning room. You sat with me and (we) talked. I remember your face and your words. Thank you (Daddy) for your kindness and compassion. I had looked forward to day I'd remind you of these. I will(still) - in Heaven. I told my Father, he was pained - He thanks you too sir. Thank you sir. Rest.

Wow!Wow!! I’m short of words. Daddy Olabisi as I used to call him. May his gentle soul Rest In Peace. I met him a few years ago through my Dad when my daughter had adenoids issues and he was so gracious. A gentle man to the core, very soft spoken and extremely humble. He’ll be greatly missed! May the holyspirit comfort his family and loved ones in Jesus name. RIP

goal
Uncle Diran Olabisi was married to my aunt Mrs Bolanle Olabisi. In the year 1980, I was studying in Edinburgh for my A levels when he did his specialist course to become a surgeon. Sister Bolanle was also studying for her masters. Uncle Diran kindly allowed me to stay with them at the time. When they finished and eventually went back to Nigeria both Dr and mrs Olabisi looked after my elderly mother until her passing over 3 years ago. Uncle Diran also looked after everyone who needed treatment.
His passing came as a rude shock.
Always smiling. Selfless, helpful, cosiderate, shoulder to cry on. A child of God. Excellent example. Eni iyi, Eni ogo. A life well spent.
Helplessly I state that we love you but God loves you more.
Sleep well our loving uncle until we meet never to part.
You will be dearly missed.

I was planning coming down to Ibadan for my appointment at DrOlabisi’s clinic when a friend called to inform me of his passing away. What a life!!! Life itself is like a tale told by an idiot, signifying nothing.
Good night , Dr Olabisi a renowned ENT Surgeon and ever smiling Dr.
May his soul rest in perfect peace amen.

"Ka-bie-si" as I fondly called Deacon Dr. John Oyediran Olabisi, was a complete gentleman, highly humane, considerate, empathetic, forthright, a lover of Christ and all that have to do with Him, a crowned Prince but never proud or arrogant, a typical "Oke-Ogun" indigene in whom there was guile. Always ready to assist, his Medical practice was a call and Ministry. Ka-bie-si, you lived and fulfilled your Ministry! Your life was a well spent life. You did not only mentored Medical personnels, you were a mentor to many of us in the Church. Thanks be to God for the opportunity to learn from the way you lived a practical and balanced Christian Life. Your memory is blessed already.

Funmi and I were in the same class in both primary school and Sunday school. I remember Dr Olabisi as the very nice doctor with a gentle smile. I know him as the Saudi doctor 😊. Whenever he came home back then and I greeted him in church, he would stop to acknowledge me and ask after my welfare. A very nice man, indeed.
Rest well with the Lord, sir.

Dr. Olabisi and Mrs. Olabisi are very close friends to my parents Dr. and Dr. Mrs Odejide and I would often hear my father fondly refer to Dr Olabisi as 'Galadima' from their time working together in Saudi Arabia.

I recall around 2001/2002 when as a young university graduate, I was living in the city of Ibadan, with my Uncle and Aunt (Prof and Prof Mrs. Odejide) and I developed such a severe earache, that I could hardly sleep. I was seen at Dr. Olabisi's hospital, there was such a reassuring and kind manner about him and he resolved my ear problem. He did not take any payment for treating me.

I have seen this love and care for people reflected through Mummy Olabisi (it amazes me how she never forgets a birthday) and his children over the years. His legacy of love for God and heart of service lives on through his children and over the last years, my life has been particularly impacted by his daughter Detola Amure.

As the song goes ...."Thank you for giving to the Lord, I am a life that was changed. Thank you for giving to the Lord, I am so glad you gave"

I pray for comfort and strength for Mummy Olabisi, Funmi, Detola, Diran, Oyebola, their spouses and children, and the entire family at this time.

In gratitude to God for a life well spent, we celebrate the life of God in you sir. He was a good man who portrayed the mind of God. He gave me opportunity to develop my medical skills after I graduated from Medical School, and those months were golden to me. May God give Mummy Olabisi, the children, and us all that he left behind the grace to bear this great demise 🙏🏾. You may be gone from our sight, but never from our hearts.

I remember when Dr OLABISI led the Sunday School Teachers prep while trying to draw an analogy talked about receiving a call earlier that day “SSS on the line”. He was trying to explain the lesson about the name of Jesus. He was a great Sunday school teacher. He was also very generous considering the use of his hospital for the deliveries of my brother’s babies at ridiculously low price. Comfort for you mummy, my former Sunday school class (10-12 girls) member, Oyebola and all the family in Jesus name.

It was a real shock to hear the news of your passing. Your legacy and impact lives on, touching the lives of those of us who did not know you personally but through your children, in particular, Detola Amure. The memory of the righteous is indeed blessed.

TRIBUTE

Dr. John Oyediran Olabisi - the Patient One

In the heady days of the conflict that pitched Ibadan Chapter against the National Old Students’ Association (NOSA) of our great school, the head that wore the Chairman’s cap of Ibadan Chapter was Dr. John Oyediran Olabisi’s. And that probably was what saved the chapter and the association.

From 2007, the rift would take the best part of six or seven years, if I remember well. For a greater part of this time, Dr. Olabisi served as the Chairman of Ibadan Chapter and he it was that the Chapter had as the go-between between it and NOSA.

Being the National Secretary at that time, I was, like every member of the National Executive Committee (NEC) in the thick of it all. I was required by the association and the constitution to receive decisions by Ibadan Chapter from Dr. Olabisi to the NEC and communicate the NEC’s resolutions, either orally or in writing whichever the case might be, to Ibadan Chapter through the same Dr. Olabisi. This afforded me the immense priviledge to relate closely with him.

Throughout this period, Dr. Olabisi’s conduct was exemplary. He was soft-spoken and patient. More ‘patient’ than any patient brought to his hospital for treatment. Although he was by far my senior (I did not meet him in school), he never for once put me down or made me feel he was my senior by so many years. Nor did he evince the dismay or anger that prevailed on either side during this momentous period.

Whether right in the trenches at the fierce Olivet meetings, or he and I were arguing almost endlessly on phone or exchanging text messages on a point of contention, he was always cordial and courteous.

As a much-sought after Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist and, on top of this, an accomplished public servant reaching the pinnacle of his career as Permanent Secretary in the Oyo State Civil Service?, one would wonder how he could have the time for Olivet duties. Yet he took the Olivet task as another vital work of his life.

He did not pretend to be perfect. No one is. He appeared to have taken the whole matter like the ailment of another ENT patient on whom he had to patiently apply his stethoscope and scalpel.

Days ran into weeks, weeks rose into months and months rolled into years. Voices were raised! Nerves became frayed! Tension, like the poised forked tongue of a snake, lurked everywhere! We held reconciliatory meetings in Oyo, Ibadan, Osogbo and Lagos. They all ended in a stalemate.

Throughout, Dr. Olabisi was firm, steadfast (almost to the point of being termed stubborn), brilliant, hard-working, painstaking, patient, gentle, affable and easy-going...

Certainly, there were a few shaky moments. These were occasioned by not getting positive results quick enough and more by being misunderstood by some among those he diligently served. This would always in part be the dilemma of every go-between, of every intermediary, of every negotiator. In the midst of all the conflagration, you can almost be sure to be misunderstood and get your fingers burnt. It is nearly the ultimate dreaded plight of every peace-maker.

Besides, moments of frustration are part of the fate of all leaders who put themselves out to serve their people truly. It is not always party for leaders. Life could be very sad, painful, lonely and unforgiving at the top especially, for example, when a decision taken in the interest of all goes awry. But in spite of a few frustrating moments, Dr. Olabisi maintained throughout a calm and dignified disposition.

Years later, by the time his term as Chairman was ending, much of the peace work had been done. The surgery was over. He could, like the surgeon he was, come out of the theatre, dry his hands, roll down his sleeves, heave a sigh of relief and wear a broad smile.

It took years, good intervention, wise counsel and a lot of sacrifice on all sides before the truce was finally broken. Today, we are happy that peace reigns within the Olivet family. We thank the Almighty.

There is a time for everything. This is no day to begin to roll out names but to appreciate everyone: the elders, past and present Presidents, other past and present office-holders at National, Chapter and Year-Set levels as well as all members for their love and sacrifice in the true spirit of Olivet.

May the peace we now enjoy never elude us again. May the tribe of Dr. Olabisi continue to increase. May his good works pave the way for him on his journey home.

There goes a pacifist, a peace-maker, a bridge-builder, a soft-spoken stabilizing voice and force.

It is not only the Olabisi family of Oke-Ogun or friends and associates of Dr. John Olabisi from Yemetu, Ibadan to the ends of the earth that are bereaved. The entire Olivet family worldwide is orphaned by the singular departure of this gentleman.

We have all lost a gem.

For the one that sought peace for others, may he find peace that passes all understanding.

Akin Orebiyii
National Secretary (2007-2011)
