Dawn's obituary

Dawn Wedge Olmstead, beloved wife, mother, MeMa, educator, and community member, passed away peacefully in January 2026 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Larry; her daughters, Lindsey and Jen; her sons-in-law, Matt and Steven; and her cherished grandchildren, Annie, Sam, Jack, and Jaime, who were the light of her life. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers.

Dawn was the daughter of a Marine and spent her early years moving frequently, including time in North Carolina and Pennsylvania. These early experiences shaped her curiosity and adaptability. She treasured her childhood days spent at the beach collecting shells, hunting for shark teeth, and swimming with her brothers—memories she carried fondly throughout her life.

A teacher by profession and at heart, Dawn dedicated more than four decades to education and service. During her 41-year career, she taught math and history, touching the lives of countless students across several schools. She showed up for her students both inside and outside the classroom and was a familiar, enthusiastic presence at athletic events, fundraisers, music competitions, and band trips. She believed deeply in her students and their potential, forming meaningful relationships that helped shape their confidence, paths, and futures. Watching her students grow and thrive brought her profound fulfillment.

After retiring from teaching in 2016, Dawn continued to pursue her many passions with the same energy and intention that defined her life. She was an avid reader and gardener who loved tending to her yard. Never one to sit still, she also became a travel agent, planning trips to Alaska, Iceland, and destinations across Europe. She fulfilled a lifelong dream of small business ownership by founding Quilt and Cruise, a venture that combined her love of quilting and travel by organizing quilting classes aboard cruise ships.

Dawn was a devoted Clemson Tigers fan and attended football games whenever possible. Beginning in 2017, she fully embraced her role as MeMa, dedicating countless hours to her grandchildren, whose laughter and presence brought her immense joy and purpose.

Known for her warmth, humor, and intentionality, Dawn had a rare gift for making people feel seen, valued, and welcome. Through her kindness, encouragement, and quick wit, she built lasting friendships and left an indelible impression on everyone she encountered.

She leaves behind an extraordinary legacy that lives on through her family, her students, and the many lives she touched. Her life was a gift to many, and her memory will continue to guide and inspire those who loved her.

The family will host a celebration of life at a later date, with details to be shared when available.
