David's obituary

David Wayne Turner, Jr.

June 5, 1972 – September 26, 2024

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of David Wayne Turner Jr., who left us on September 26, 2024, at the age of 52. Known to those who had the pleasure of knowing him as a man of many remarkable qualities, David’s legacy will be remembered fondly by all who crossed his path.

Born in Rahway, New Jersey, David spent his formative years in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where his intelligence, kindness, and ambition were evident from a young age. Summers at the Turner family lake house in Maine fostered his love of nature and adventure, memories he cherished throughout his life.

David pursued his higher education at Louisiana State University, where he earned both his Bachelor of Science and Master’s degrees. His love for the LSU Tigers endured long after his time on campus. During his graduation, David was honored not just for his academic achievements but also for his entrepreneurial spirit, having founded his first company, Rent-A-Geek, while still a student. This was the start of a brilliant career that would see him launch several successful businesses, always with the vision and drive that set him apart.

After spending some time in San Francisco, David’s journey brought him to San Diego, where he built a beautiful life raising two cherished sons, Jonathan David and Lucas Lincoln. David’s devotion to his family was unmatched, and his love for his boys was the cornerstone of his life. His parents, Dr. David Turner and Anita Spires Turner,  along with his brother, Seth Ryan Turner, and sister-in-law, Griselda Turner, were immensely proud of the man, husband, and father he had become.

David’s work as a visionary entrepreneur and his travels around the world earned him friendships across the globe. His magnetic personality, sense of humor, and adventurous spirit made him a beacon of light for those around him, and he left a lasting impact on everyone he encountered, both personally and professionally.

In addition to his business ventures, David found great joy in mentoring the next generation of entrepreneurs. As a passionate professor at San Diego State University, he inspired his students to dream big and pursue their goals with determination. His storytelling captivated his students, and his mentorship left a lasting imprint on their lives. His departure leaves a significant void in the lives of his students and colleagues alike.

David’s legacy is one of kindness, generosity, and boundless energy. Though he has left us far too soon, his memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives he touched.

David will be deeply missed, but his 52 years of life will forever be remembered as a testament to his remarkable character. “What a great guy!”—a sentiment shared by all who had the privilege of knowing him.  As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate the remarkable life he lived—a life of kindness, ambition, and unwavering dedication to his family and community.
